Abstract
Photoacoustic imaging is a promising method for visualizing biological tissues with optical absorbers. This article provides an overview of the rapidly developing field of photoacoustic imaging. Photoacoustics, the physical basis of photoacoustic imaging, is analyzed briefly. The merits of photoacoustic technology, compared with optical imaging and ultrasonic imaging, are described. Various imaging techniques are also discussed, including scanning tomography, computed tomography and original detection of photoacoustic imaging. Finally, some biomedical applications of photoacoustic imaging are summarized.

Characterization of sparse-array detection photoacoustic tomography using the singular value decomposition

TL;DR: Numerically compute the singular value decomposition (SVD) of different system matrices that are relevant to implementations of sparse-array PAT to reveal the type of object features that can reliably be reconstructed as well as those that are invisible to the imaging system.

Real-time clutter reduction in epi-optoacoustic imaging of human volunteers

TL;DR: This work has developed displacement-compensated averaging (DCA) for clutter reduction, based on the clutter decorrelation that occurs when palpating the tissue using the ultrasound probe, and has now been implemented on a research ultrasound system for real time scanning with freehand guidance of the linear probe.

Multidimensional Wave Field Signal Theory: Transfer Function Relationships

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived multidimensional input/output transfer function relationships in the spatial domain for these equations in order to permit such a signal theoretic approach to problem solving, and showed that the relationships assume particularly simple and computationally useful forms once the appropriate curvilinear version of a multi-dimensional spatial Fourier transform is used.

Bias-sensitive crossed-electrode relaxor 2D arrays for 3D photoacoustic imaging

TL;DR: In this article, bias sensitive piezoelectric transducer arrays for 3D photoacoustic imaging were introduced, where a 64×64 element relaxor array using a crossed electrode or Top-Orthogonal to Bottom-Electrode (TOBE) wiring configuration was used to receive photoacoustical data from two crossed wires with 17.8 um diameters in an intralipid medium.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported a method of measuring the local speed-of-sound variations by the addition of an absorber to the conventional imager, arranged between the light source and subject.
