Sdss-iii: massive spectroscopic surveys of the distant universe, the milky way, and extra-solar planetary systems

Daniel J. Eisenstein, +263 more
TL;DR: SDSS-III as mentioned in this paper is a program of four spectroscopic surveys on three scientific themes: dark energy and cosmological parameters, the history and structure of the Milky Way, and the population of giant planets around other stars.
Journal ArticleDOI

CANDELS: The Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey

Norman A. Grogin, +108 more
TL;DR: The Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) as discussed by the authors was designed to document the first third of galactic evolution, from z approx. 8 - 1.5 to test their accuracy as standard candles for cosmology.
Journal ArticleDOI

Candels: The cosmic assembly near-infrared deep extragalactic legacy survey - The hubble space telescope observations, imaging data products, and mosaics

Anton M. Koekemoer, +124 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the Hubble Space Telescope imaging data products and data reduction procedures for the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS).
Journal ArticleDOI

The baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey of sdss-iii

Kyle S. Dawson, +184 more
TL;DR: The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) as discussed by the authors was designed to measure the scale of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of matter over a larger volume than the combined efforts of all previous spectroscopic surveys of large-scale structure.

Beyond the t dwarfs: theoretical spectra, colors, and detectability of the coolest brown dwarfs

TL;DR: In this paper, the spectral and atmospheric properties of brown dwarfs cooler than the latest known T dwarfs were explored, with the focus on the yet-to-be-discovered free-floating brown dwarFS in the Teff range from ~800 to ~130 K and with masses from 25 to 1 MJ.
Journal ArticleDOI

JHK standard stars for large telescopes: the UKIRT Fundamental and Extended lists

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented high-precision JHK photometry with the 3.8m UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) of 82 standard stars, 28 from the widely used preliminary list known as the UKIRT Faint Standards, referred to here as the Fundamental List, and 54 additional stars referred to as the Extended List.
Journal ArticleDOI

Old Stellar Galactic Disc in Near-Plane Regions according to 2MASS: Scales, Cut-off, Flare and Warp

TL;DR: In this article, two dierent methods to analyze the old stellar population near the Galactic plane, using data from the 2MASS survey, were pursued, and the qualitative conclusions are that the disc is well fitted by an exponential distribution in both the galactocentric distance and height.
