Journal ArticleDOI
Functional identity and diversity of animals predict ecosystem functioning better than species-based indices
Vesna Gagic,Ignasio Bartomeus,Tomas Jonsson,Astrid Taylor,Camilla Winqvist,Christina Fischer,Eleanor M. Slade,Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter,Mark C. Emmerson,Simon G. Potts,Teja Tscharntke,Wolfgang W. Weisser,Riccardo Bommarco +12 more
TL;DR: This study provides new insights into the general mechanisms that link biodiversity to ecosystem functioning in natural animal communities and suggests that the observed responses were due to the identity and dominance patterns of the trait composition rather than the number or abundance of species per se.
Journal ArticleDOI
Higher predation risk for insect prey at low latitudes and elevations
Tomas Roslin,Tomas Roslin,Bess Hardwick,Vojtech Novotny,Vojtech Novotny,William K. Petry,William K. Petry,Nigel R. Andrew,Ashley L. Asmus,Isabel C. Barrio,Isabel C. Slade,Eleanor M. Slade,Eleanor M. Slade +51 more
TL;DR: Across an 11,660-kilometer latitudinal gradient spanning six continents, increasing predation toward the equator is found, with a parallel pattern of increasingpredation toward lower elevations, suggesting consistent drivers of biotic interaction strength.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental evidence for the effects of dung beetle functional group richness and composition on ecosystem function in a tropical forest.
TL;DR: Overall, both dung and seed removal increased with dung beetle functional group richness, however, levels of ecosystem functioning were idiosyncratic depending on the identity of the functional groups present, indicating an important role for functional group composition.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: A new database of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world is described and assessed.

TL;DR: The results suggest that current knowledge on the ES provided by insects is relatively scarce and biased, and gaps in the least-studied functional and taxonomic groups are shown.
