Ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are fundamentally and technologically intriguing. In contrast to the graphene sheet, they are chemically versatile. Mono- or few-layered TMDs - obtained either through exfoliation of bulk materials or bottom-up syntheses - are direct-gap semiconductors whose bandgap energy, as well as carrier type (n- or p-type), varies between compounds depending on their composition, structure and dimensionality. In this Review, we describe how the tunable electronic structure of TMDs makes them attractive for a variety of applications. They have been investigated as chemically active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and hydrosulfurization, as well as electrically active materials in opto-electronics. Their morphologies and properties are also useful for energy storage applications such as electrodes for Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

The chemistry of two-dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets

Electrostatic self-assembled Ag2O/TiO2 nanobelts heterostructure was synthesized via simple physical mixing of Ag2O nanoparticles and TiO2 nanobelts. The morphologies and microstructures of Ag2O/TiO2 nanobelt heterostructure were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The interface dominated high UV photocatalytic activity and degraded photoluminescence strength of composite catalyst confirmed the heterostructure effect between Ag2O nanoparticles and TiO2 nanobelts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscope provided direct evidence of charge transfer on the heterostructures between them.

Interface dominated high photocatalytic properties of electrostatic self-assembled Ag2O/TiO2 heterostructure

Heterostructures play an important role not only in the manufacture of semiconductor devices, but also in the field of catalysis. Herein, we report the synthesis of PdO/TiO2 and Pd/TiO2 heterostructured nanobelts by means of a simple co-precipitation method, followed by a reduction process using surface-modified TiO2 nanobelts as templates. The as-obtained heterostructures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. PdO and Pd nanoparticles with a size of about 1.3 and 1.6 nm were assembled uniformly on the surface of TiO2 nanobelts, respectively. Compared with TiO2 nanobelts, PdO/TiO2 and Pd/TiO2 hybrid nanobelts exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity upon UV and visible-light irradiation. Photoelectrochemical technology was used to study the heterostructure effect on enhanced photocatalytic activity. Our mechanistic investigation revealed that energy-band matching is the major factor in the observed enhancement of photocatalytic activity.
