TL;DR: Along with the high prevalence of RC in childhood, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of the disease are also frequent and the socioeconomic burden of the Disease can be reduced by increasing awareness and proper diagnosis/treatment.
Abstract: Background: Rhinoconjunctivitis (RC) is regarded as the most common chronic disease of childhood; however, the currently available epidemiological studies on prevalence, burden, and risk factors of RC are insufficient. This analysis aimed to investigate potential risk factors, symptom frequency, and burden of RC. Methods: Using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Phase II questionnaires, 6963 elementary school children aged 9 –11 years were surveyed in five different city centers of Turkey. All participants were skin-prick tested with common aeroallergens. Results: The prevalence of ever rhinitis, physician-diagnosed rhinitis, current rhinitis, and current RC were 51.6, 31.0, 43.5, and 23.1%, respectively; 19.8% of children with RC symptoms were atopic to at least one allergen. Among students with RC symptoms, 42.2, 23.9, 35.8, and 28.2% reported moderate–severe interference of daily activities, at least 1 day of absence from school, visit to a health care professional, and any drug usage for rhinitis, respectively. Nasal decongestants and oral antihistamines were the most frequently used treatment. Approximately 70% of RC patients reported perennial symptoms and 42.8% were classified as mild to intermittent. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed family history of asthma and/or allergic rhinitis (odds ratio [OR] 1.863; confidence interval, [CI] 1.583–2.191; p 0.001), living in a house with mold and dampness in the 1st year of life (OR 1.651; CI 1.356 –2.01; p 0.001), maternal smoking in pregnancy (OR 1.425; CI 1.089 –1.864; p 0.011), low monthly income (OR 1.685; CI 1.422–1.998; p 0.001), current wheezing (OR 2.543; CI 2.151–3.006; p 0.001), and current atopic eczema (OR 2.503; CI 1.96 –3.196; p 0.001) as significant risk factors for current RC. Conclusion: Along with the high prevalence of RC in childhood, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of the disease are also frequent. The socioeconomic burden of the disease can be reduced by increasing awareness and proper diagnosis/treatment. (Am J Rhinol Allergy 24, 364 –370, 2010; doi: 10.2500/ajra.2010.24.3484)

TL;DR: Any ICD may be seen in one of six patients with prolactinoma who are receiving DA therapy and endocrinology specialists should be aware of this side effect, particularly in male patients with a history of gambling, smoking, or alcohol use.
Abstract: CONTEXT Dopamine agonist (DA)-induced impulse control disorder (ICD) in patients with prolactinomas is not sufficiently known. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of DA-induced ICDs and possible risk factors related to these disorders in patients with prolactinoma. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This is a cross-sectional multicenter study involving 308 patients with prolactinoma followed up in tertiary referral centers who received at least three months of DA therapy. DA-induced ICDs (pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, and compulsive eating) and impulsivity were assessed using the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson Disease and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11, respectively. Patients were evaluated in terms of parameters related to ICD development. RESULTS Any ICD prevalence was 17% (n = 51). Hypersexuality was most common (6.5%). Although any ICD and hypersexuality were more common in male patients (P = 0.009, P < 0.001, respectively), compulsive eating was more common in female patients (P = 0.046). Current smoking, alcohol use, and gambling history were more frequent (P = 0.033, P = 0.002, P = 0.008, respectively) in patients with any ICD. In Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 total, attentional, motor, and nonplanning scores were higher in patients with any ICD (P < 0.001). Current smoking and alcohol use were more frequent (P = 0.007, P = 0.003, respectively) and percentage increase of testosterone levels at last visit was higher (P = 0.021) in male patients with prolactinomas with hypersexuality. CONCLUSION Any ICD may be seen in one of six patients with prolactinoma who are receiving DA therapy. Endocrinology specialists should be aware of this side effect, particularly in male patients with a history of gambling, smoking, or alcohol use.

TL;DR: AGP or EOM supplementation to the laying hen diet significantly increased the egg production rate and egg weight as compared to the control diet alone, but egg mass output, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio were not affected by the dietary treatments.
Abstract: One thousand two hundred 1-day-old Lohmann LSL white and Lohmann Brown layer chickens were fed diets supplemented with either an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) or an herbal essential oil mixture (EOM) till 58 wk of age to reveal the long-term effects of those additives on growth, performance and wholesome egg quality parameters The study was arranged in a 2x3 factorial design with two layer strains and three feed additive regimens Thus, the layer birds of both strains were randomly assigned to the three dietary treatments, ie, standard basal diet (control), control with AGP (specifically, avilamycin, 10 mg/kg diet) and control with EOM (24 mg/kg diet) The data regarding egg production were recorded between 22 to 58 weeks of age Neither the dietary treatments nor the bird strain influenced the body weight and mortality of the birds in both the growing and laying period AGP or EOM supplementation to the laying hen diet significantly increased the egg production rate and egg weight as compared to the control diet alone, but egg mass output, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio were not effected by the dietary treatments Neither dietary treatment created any statistically significantly differences in egg quality parameters with the exception of Haugh unit The research findings have confirmed the beneficial effects of supplementation with feed-grade EOM on the laying rate and egg weight of both white and brown layers Indeed, EOM, being a novel feed additive natural origin, proved to be as efficacious as AGP in promoting egg yield
