Abstract: Introduction: Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an essential mitochondrial co-factor and, as a free molecule, it can exert multi-level immunomodulatory functions. Both ALA and its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), are believed to be able to chelate heavy metals, to regenerate essential antioxidants and to repair important molecules damaged by oxidation. The largest part of the effects of ALA/DHLA couple can be explained by a specific stimulatory activity on Nrf2-dependent gene transcription and by the inhibition of NF-kB activity. These features have prompted its use as a drug for several diseases.Areas covered: This article surveys the main features of ALA/DHLA and its therapeutic effects. Its complex and differentiated function cannot simply be reduced to anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detoxifying action. Abstract: Cultivated Agaricus bisporus possess the ability to bioaccumulate seven heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn). The cultivated champignon mushroom A. bisporus was grown in soil composts of 16 different compositions. An edible mushroom, A. bisporus was also cultivated on humic compost artificially fortified with the seven heavy metals at five different concentrations (0.1 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg, 1.0 mg/kg, 3.0 mg/kg, and 10.0 mg/kg) and on control substrate (0 mg/kg) on a dry weight basis. The method of measuring bioaccumulation was flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Abstract: Nanoparticles of Cu have been made in zinc oxide crystals by ion implantation. The Cu ions were implanted at 400 keV into the (0 0 0 1) face of a single crystal. After implantation and after post-irradiation annealing there are numerous changes in the luminescence responses which include a variety of green and yellow emission bands. Following annealing at temperatures up to 1000 °C a green luminescence near 525 nm was observed which has been associated with the isolated Cu ions. The changes between as implanted and annealed luminescence signals suggests that the implants generate clustering or nanoparticle formation of Cu but anneals dissociate them.
