TL;DR: This paper used Cox Proportional Hazards Models, the Longitudinal Immigration Database, and Harmonized Census Data files to investigate individual and community determinants of retention of Anglophone and Francophone immigrants in Canada among 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 landing cohorts in the first five years after landing.
Abstract: This paper uses Cox Proportional Hazards Models, the Longitudinal Immigration Database, and Harmonized Census Data files to investigate the individual and community determinants of retention of Anglophone and Francophone immigrants in Canada among 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005 landing cohorts in the first five years after landing. We focus on both the official language capacity of immigrants and the linguistic composition of the communities in which they settle. We find that Official Language Minority Communities (OLMCs) successfully retained Francophone immigrants better than non-OLMCs outside of Quebec. We also find that most cohorts of Anglophone immigrants are more likely to exit Quebec if they started out in an OLMC than if they did not.

TL;DR: This paper proposed a composite-quantile approach to jointly estimate multi-dimensional group memberships, slope coefficients, and fixed effects, showing that using multiple quantiles improves clustering accuracy if memberships are quantile-invariant.
Abstract: This paper aims to identify the multi-dimensional latent grouped heterogeneity of distributional effects. We consider a panel quantile regression model with additive cross-section and time fixed effects. The cross-section effects and quantile slope coefficients are both characterized by grouped patterns of heterogeneity, but each unit can belong to different groups for cross-section effects and slopes. We propose a composite-quantile approach to jointly estimate multi-dimensional group memberships, slope coefficients, and fixed effects. We show that using multiple quantiles improves clustering accuracy if memberships are quantile-invariant. We apply the methods to examine the relationship between managerial incentives and risk-taking behavior.

01 Jun 2017TL;DR: Three patient case studies, will illustrate novel techniques for using virtual reality technology to treat patients with complex rehabilitation needs to promote top down regulation of the autonomic nervous system by using VR to challenge the patients in small exposures.
Abstract: Three patient case studies, will illustrate novel techniques for using virtual reality technology to treat patients with complex rehabilitation needs. The patients were respectively diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), persistent pain with post-concussion syndrome and persistent pain with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The common treatment goal for these patients is to use VR to promote top down regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) by using VR to challenge the patients in small exposures. The exposure and subsequent required control by the patients will promote creation of new adaptive neural plastic networks. The patient treatment sessions were complete on a Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) Extended system (MotekForce link, The Netherlands) located at The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC). The outcome measures to evaluate the treatment effectiveness will demonstrate changes in The World Health Organization categories of tissue dysfunction, patient activities and participation.

TL;DR: In the wake of the Deep Horizon spill in the US, the authors considers the lessons learned from the Atlantic Canada experience, and makes recommendations for the design of an oil and gas strategic environmental assessment process for exploration in the Beaufort Sea.
Abstract: Strategic Environmental Assessments have been used on the Atlantic Coast of Canada to inform oil and gas exploration decisions. Both the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia offshore petroleum boards have about a decade of experience with strategic environmental assessments. In the Beaufort Sea, there is no such process currently in place to guide decisions about oil and gas exploration. In the wake of the Deep Horizon spill in the US, this article considers the lessons learned from the Atlantic Canada experience, and makes recommendations for the design of an oil and gas strategic environmental assessment process for exploration in the Beaufort Sea.

TL;DR: The authors studied the extent to which similarity in central bank statements matters for the reception of their content in financial markets, and found that similar press releases generate less market volatility, but that more substantial textual changes after a sequence of very similar statements lead to much larger volatility.
Abstract: Press releases announcing and explaining monetary policy decisions play a critical role in the communication strategy of central banks. Due to their market-moving potential, it is particularly important how they are drafted. Often, central banks start from the previous statement, and update the earlier text at the margin. This makes it straightforward to compare statements and see how the central bank’s thinking has evolved; however, more substantial changes, which will eventually be required, might then be harder to understand. Using variation in the drafting process at the Bank of Canada, this paper studies the extent to which similarity in central bank statements matters for the reception of their content in financial markets. It shows that similar press releases generate less market volatility, but that more substantial textual changes after a sequence of very similar statements lead to much larger volatility.
