Abstract: Based on the data on earnings distributions from the national labour force surveys of 1974-98, trends in income inequality are studied. Of particular note are the findings from the Paglin Gini and Theil decompositions. The former show that behind an invariant overall Gini ratio lies a declining inter-age disparity and growing P-Gini. From the latter, it is found that inter-age and inter-educational disparities have respectively contributed some 12 per cent and 34 per cent to overall inequality. It is found that inter-occupational inequality, as measured by the Theil index, almost doubled in the period. This is in sharp contrast to trends in inter-educational activity, thus illustrating that the education-occupation linkage is not clear-cut.

Abstract: Castes, or endogamous kinship relationships, are prevalent in communities across the world and particularly in developing countries. Caste plays a strong role in determining community structures and political power. However, the role of caste as a factor in shaping e-governance design and outcomes is absent in the literature. This paper addresses this particular gap by examining some cases from India. The paper specifically considers whether the priorities of dominant caste groups determine e-governance design and implementations, to the exclusion of marginal and non-dominant castes. Further, it examines if e-governance introductions change or affect the relations of caste groups. The research relies on Structuration theory to provide a framework through which to study these issues. Data from three case studies from India are used to conduct the analysis, and these include the Bhoomi project from Karnataka, the Gyandoot project from Madhya Pradesh, and the VKC project from Puducherry. All three are information kiosk-based projects for providing e-governance services for citizens living in villages and rural areas.

Abstract: Internal auditing is an important element in the corporate governance framework. Yet, research related to internal auditing, particularly in emerging economies like India and China, is sparse. We use data from responses provided by chief audit executives to provide empirical evidence about the extent of support for internal auditing and the determinants of such support in India and China, and compare the data with those from the United States. We find that such support is negatively related to pressure on internal auditors to suppress or alter their findings. We also provide descriptive evidence about the work and staffing of the internal audit function. We discuss the role of internal auditing in India and identify some possible avenues for future research.

Abstract: Women constitute 48% of the population of India; yet their presence on the boards of companies has not been substantial. This paper attempts to define the pathways available to women on Indian boards. A qualitative research methodology with 15 in-depth interviews with women directors was adopted to study the phenomena. The study’s findings indicate that while the identification of women directors is largely a non-structured, idiosyncratic process, social capital — which includes the individual’s network ties and reputation — is a critical aspect aiding director identification. We also find the role of the chairperson to be critical in facilitating the participation of women directors on boards. Organisational characteristics and the credibility of co-directors are important considerations in the decision to join the board. The policy implications include the need for more structured approaches to identification, effective director assessment processes, and multi-stakeholder intervention to build the pipeline of women directors for the future.
