TL;DR: It is suggested that the integration of two cultures, or biculturalism, is an indicator of successful adaptation to immigration later in life; older Chinese and Korean immigrants are adjusting to living in the United States and blending multiple cultures simultaneously.
Abstract: Objective. Our objective in this study was to examine how family social-support expectations have changed among older Chinese and Korean U.S. immigrants. Methods. Fifty-two Cantonese- and Korean-speaking immigrants older than 60 years participated in eight focus groups. Transcripts were translated into English. Themes were developed based on a coding structure and compared to past research. Results. Participants discussed changed perspectives of family social support and the need to integrate both American and Chinese or Korean culture, thus becoming bicultural. Three distinct perspectives of family emerged: (1) participants felt they had become peripheral family members, (2) parents were no longer authority figures in families, and (3) participants were more independent. Finally, participants described how factors such as a changed economic environment, living alone, and extending their social network beyond family, promoted a move to biculturalism. Discussion. These results suggest that the integration of two cultures, or biculturalism, is an indicator of successful adaptation to immigration later in life; older Chinese and Korean immigrants are adjusting to living in the United States and blendingmultipleculturessimultaneously. Thus, acculturationframeworksimplyingalinearprocessmaynotbetheoretically valid as ethnic identity, particularly for those who immigrate to different countries, changes over the life course.

TL;DR: The Caring Climate Scale (CCS) as mentioned in this paper measures the extent to which individuals perceive a particular setting to be interpersonally inviting, safe, supportive and capable of providing the experience of being valued and respected.
Abstract: Scholars have emphasized the importance of creating a caring environment in physical activity settings Given that there is currently no measure of a caring environment in the physical domain, the purpose of these two studies was to develop the Caring Climate Scale (CCS) and examine its psychometric properties A caring climate is defined in this paper as the extent to which individuals perceive a particular setting to be interpersonally inviting, safe, supportive and capable of providing the experience of being valued and respected In Study 1, 353 children in a sport camp completed the CCS Exploratory factor analyses revealed an internally consistent single factor, labelled caring climate, and supported the validity of the measure In Study 2, 395 sport campers completed the CCS and assessments of the programmes future involvement and reported value Confirmatory factor analysis revealed support for a 13-item version of the CCS

TL;DR: A method is proposed for generating Bessel-like optical beams with arbitrary trajectories in free space that can be useful as hybrids between non-accelerating and accelerating optical waves that share diffraction-resisting and self-healing properties.
Abstract: A method is proposed for generating Bessel-like optical beams with arbitrary trajectories in free space. The method involves phase-modulating an optical wavefront so that conical bundles of rays are formed whose apexes write a continuous focal curve with pre-specified shape. These ray cones have circular bases on the input plane; thus their interference results in a Bessel-like transverse field profile that propagates along the specified trajectory with a remarkably invariant main lobe. Such beams can be useful as hybrids between non-accelerating and accelerating optical waves that share diffraction-resisting and self-healing properties.

TL;DR: It is suggested that a shift in breathing patterns may contribute to the development of alpha EEG, and those patterns need to be investigated further.
Abstract: This study explores the physiological correlates of a highly practiced Kundalini Yoga meditator. Thoracic and abdominal breathing patterns, heart rate (HR), occipital parietal electroencephalograph (EEG), skin conductance level (SCL), and blood volume pulse (BVP) were monitored during prebaseline, meditation, and postbaseline periods. Visual analyses of the data showed a decrease in respiration rate during the meditation from a mean of 11 breaths/min for the pre- and 13 breaths/min for the postbaseline to a mean of 5 breaths/min during the meditation, with a predominance of abdominal/diaphragmatic breathing. There was also more alpha EEG activity during the meditation (M = 1.71 μV) compared to the pre- (M = .47 μV) and postbaseline (M = .78 μV) periods, and an increase in theta EEG activity immediately following the meditation (M = .62 μV) compared to the pre-baseline and meditative periods (each with M = .26 μV). These findings suggest that a shift in breathing patterns may contribute to the development of alpha EEG, and those patterns need to be investigated further.
