TL;DR: It is recommended that for athletes to derive the physiological benefits of LH+TL, they need to live at a natural elevation of 2000-2500 m for>or=4 wk for >or=22 h.d(-1).
Abstract: Live high-train low (LH+TL) altitude training was developed in the early 1990s in response to potential training limitations imposed on endurance athletes by traditional live high-train high (LH+TH) altitude training. The essence of LH+TL is that it allows athletes to "live high" for the purpose of facilitating altitude acclimatization, as manifest by a profound and sustained increase in endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) and ultimately an augmented erythrocyte volume, while simultaneously allowing athletes to "train low" for the purpose of replicating sea-level training intensity and oxygen flux, thereby inducing beneficial metabolic and neuromuscular adaptations. In addition to "natural/terrestrial" LH+TL, several simulated LH+TL devices have been developed to conveniently bring the mountain to the athlete, including nitrogen apartments, hypoxic tents, and hypoxicator devices. One of the key questions regarding the practical application of LH+TL is, what is the optimal hypoxic dose needed to facilitate altitude acclimatization and produce the expected beneficial physiological responses and sea-level performance effects? The purpose of this paper is to objectively answer that question, on the basis of an extensive body of research by our group in LH+TL altitude training. We will address three key questions: 1) What is the optimal altitude at which to live? 2) How many days are required at altitude? and 3) How many hours per day are required? On the basis of consistent findings from our research group, we recommend that for athletes to derive the physiological benefits of LH+TL, they need to live at a natural elevation of 2000-2500 m for >or=4 wk for >or=22 h.d(-1).

TL;DR: In this paper, avoidance coping and problem-solving coping (inversely) predicted stress, and stress and avoidance coping inversely predicted life satisfaction among 114 African American students, while avoidance coping did not moderate racial discrimination stress or stress-life satisfaction relationships.
Abstract: In this study, avoidance coping and problem-solving coping (inversely) predicted stress, and stress and avoidance coping inversely predicted life satisfaction among 114 African American students. Coping did not moderate racial discrimination stress or stress-life satisfaction relationships. Fostering problem solving and reducing avoidance may help to alleviate racism-related stress and foster well-being.

TL;DR: The authors explored the relationship between political tolerance and religious beliefs and found that political tolerance has long been linked to religion, but that linkage has been defined only vaguely, while also suggesting that the two areas of study are not unrelated.
Abstract: ALTHOUGH surveys conducted in the 1960s and 70s have produced evidence of the public's increasing political tolerance, some scholars have questioned those findings and the methods that produced them. At the same time, visible political action by religious groups and their leaders has created renewed interest in the connections between religious beliefs and practice on the one hand and political beliefs and actions on the other. These two areas of study-political tolerance and religion-are not unrelated. Political tolerance has long been linked to religion, but that linkage has been defined only vaguely. We explore the relationship, examining both religious denomination and church attendance as correlates of political tolerance. This investigation differs from prior studies in looking at political tolerance within rather precise denominational groups and by evaluating the effects of church attendance within denominations. Our findings shed light on the nature and sources of political tolerance, while also suggesting

TL;DR: In dogs with osteoarthritic pain refractory to an NSAID, physical activity is improved by the addition of amantadine, which might be a useful adjunct therapy for the clinical management of canine osteoartritic pain.
Abstract: Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) do not always provide sufficient pain relief in dogs with osteoarthritis (OA).
Hypothesis: The use of amantadine in addition to NSAID therapy will provide improved pain relief when compared with the use of nonsteroidal analgesics alone in naturally occurring OA in dogs.
Animals: Thirty-one client-owned dogs with pelvic limb lameness despite the administration of an NSAID.
Methods: The study was randomized, blinded, and placebo controlled with parallel groups (days 21–42). On day 0, analgesic medications were discontinued. On day 7, all dogs received meloxicam for 5 weeks. On day 21, all dogs received amantadine (3–5 mg/kg once daily per os) or placebo for 21 days, in addition to receiving meloxicam. Assessments were performed before the study and on days 7, 21, and 42. Primary outcome measures were blinded owner assessments of activity using client-specific outcome measures (CSOM) on days 0, 7, 21, and 42. Data were analyzed by a mixed model approach.
Results: For CSOM activity, there was a significant time by treatment effect (P=.009). On the basis of the planned post hoc t-tests of postrandomization means, there was a significant difference between treatment groups on day 42 (P=.030), with the amantadine group being more active.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: In dogs with osteoarthritic pain refractory to an NSAID, physical activity is improved by the addition of amantadine. Amantadine might be a useful adjunct therapy for the clinical management of canine osteoarthritic pain.
