Abstract: IPS, a performance measurement system for parallel and distributed programs, is currently running on its second implementation. IPS's model of parallel programs uses knowledge about the semantics of a program's structure to provide two important features. First, IPS provides a large amount of performance data about the execution of a parallel program, and this information is organized so that access to it is easy and intuitive. Secondly, IPS provides performance analysis techniques that help to guide the programmer automatically to the location of program bottlenecks. The first implementation of IPS was a testbed for the basic design concepts, providing experience with a hierarchical program and measurement model, interactive program analysis, and automatic guidance techniques. It was built on the Charlotte distributed operating system. The second implementation, IPS-2, extends the basic system with new instrumentation techniques, an interactive and graphical user interface, and new automatic guidance analysis techniques. This implementation runs on 4.3BSD UNIX systems, on the VAX, DECstation, Sun 4, and Sequent Symmetry multiprocessor. >

Abstract: To identify factors that influence individual and group transmission of Chlamydia, the authors conducted community-wide contact tracing of chlamydia cases in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from mid-1996 to mid-1997. Case patients identified persons with whom they had had contact during the 6 months preceding diagnosis; contacts were actively sought and offered DNA amplification testing. Sexual contact networks were used to identify "source cases" and "spread cases," permitting estimation of the basic reproduction number (R0) for individuals and groups. Network and epidemiologic factors influencing R0 were assessed using univariate and multivariate procedures. Of 1,309 case patients, 1,131 (86%) were interviewed, and 2,409 contacts were identified. The 1,131 interviewed cases yielded 623.9 computed spread cases, for an overall R0 of 0.55. Few subgroups analyzed yielded a mean R0 exceeding unity-an observation in keeping with routine surveillance information which suggests that chlamydia incidence is declining in Colorado Springs. Concurrency, a network measure of simultaneous partnerships, was the most powerful predictor of transmission. Direct estimation of basic reproduction numbers for chlamydia using contact tracing techniques is feasible and can produce useful data with which to prioritize control efforts, evaluate interventions, and gauge the place of chlamydia on the epidemic continuum.

Operational prototyping, a method that combines throwaway and evolutionary prototyping techniques by layering a rapid prototype over a solid evolutionary base, is described. Operational prototyping's implications for configuration management, quality assurance, and general project management are reviewed. The application of operational prototyping to a prototype ocean surveillance terminal is presented. >

Abstract: In this paper, we see adaptive control as a three-part adaptive-filtering problem. First, the dynamical system we wish to control is modeled using adaptive system-identification techniques. Second, the dynamic response of the system is controlled using an adaptive feedforward controller. No direct feedback is used, except that the system output is monitored and used by an adaptive algorithm to adjust the parameters of the controller. Third, disturbance canceling is performed using an additional adaptive filter. The canceler does not affect system dynamics, but feeds back plant disturbance in a way that minimizes output disturbance power. The techniques work to control minimum-phase or nonminimum-phase, linear or nonlinear, single-input-single-output (SISO) or multiple-input-multiple-ouput (MIMO), stable or stabilized systems. Constraints may additionally be placed on control effort for a practical implementation. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate that the proposed methods work very well.
