TLDR
A stochastic discrete automaton model is introduced to simulate freeway traffic and shows a transition from laminar traffic flow to start-stop- waves with increasing vehicle density, as is observed in real freeway traffic.
Abstract
We introduce a stochastic discrete automaton model to simulate freeway traffic. Monte-Carlo simulations of the model show a transition from laminar traffic flow to start-stop- waves with increasing vehicle density, as is observed in real freeway traffic. For special cases analytical results can be obtained.

A market-inspired approach to reservation-based urban road traffic management

TL;DR: This paper conceive the system as a computational economy, where driver agents trade with infrastructure agents in a virtual marketplace, purchasing reservations to cross intersections when commuting through the city, and shows that in situations of similar traffic load, an increase of the infrastructure's monetary benefit usually implies a decrease of the drivers' average travel times.

Empirical analysis and simulation of the concave growth pattern of traffic oscillations

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the growth pattern of traffic oscillations in the NGSIM vehicle trajectories data, via measuring the standard deviation of vehicle velocity involved in oscillations, and found that the velocity increases in a concave way along vehicles in the oscillations.

Dynamic Performance Simulation of Long-Span Bridge under Combined Loads of Stochastic Traffic and Wind

TL;DR: In this paper, a new "semideterministic" bridge dynamic analytical model is proposed which considers dynamic interactions between the bridge, wind, and stochastic "real" traffic by integrating the equivalent dynamic wheel load EDWL approach and the cellular automaton CA traffic flow simulation.

Collective effects in traffic on bi-directional ant trails.

TL;DR: A model of bi-directional ant traffic on pre-existing ant trails captures in a simple way some of the generic collective features of movements of real ants on a trail and demonstrates that there are crucial qualitative differences between vehicular- and ant-traffics.

Cellular automaton rules conserving the number of active sites

TL;DR: This paper shows how to determine all of the unidimensional two-state cellular automaton rules of a given number of inputs which conserve the number of active sites.
