An overview of the main model components used in chronological analysis, their mathematical formulation, and examples of how such analyses can be performed using the latest version of the OxCal software (v4) are given.Abstract:
If radiocarbon measurements are to be used at all for chronological purposes, we have to use statistical methods for calibration. The most widely used method of calibration can be seen as a simple application of Bayesian statistics, which uses both the information from the new measurement and information from the 14C calibration curve. In most dating applications, however, we have larger numbers of 14C measurements and we wish to relate those to events in the past. Bayesian statistics provides a coherent framework in which such analysis can be performed and is becoming a core element in many 14C dating projects. This article gives an overview of the main model components used in chronological analysis, their mathematical formulation, and examples of how such analyses can be performed using the latest version of the OxCal software (v4). Many such models can be put together, in a modular fashion, from simple elements, with defined constraints and groupings. In other cases, the commonly used "uniform phase" models might not be appropriate, and ramped, exponential, or normal distributions of events might be more useful. When considering analyses of these kinds, it is useful to be able run simulations on synthetic data. Methods for performing such tests are discussed here along with other methods of diagnosing possible problems with statistical models of this kind.read more

Landscape-related transformation and differentiation of Chernozems – Catenary approach in the Silesian Lowland, SW Poland
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used textural and geochemical indices to identify parent material homogeneity and soil classification in the main part of the catena, which confirmed that the differentiation of “dry” and “wet” chernozemic soil across the Catena did not result from the variability of parent material, and no differences in morphological or physicochemical characteristics of mollic horizons were identified between the well-drained and wet sections of theCatena.

Radiocarbon dates from jar and coffin burials of the cardamom mountains reveal a unique mortuary ritual in cambodia's late- to post-angkor period (15th-17th centuries ad)

TL;DR: In this paper, the first radiocarbon dates from previously unrecorded secondary burials in the Cardamom Moun- tains, Cambodia were presented, and the suite of 28 14C ages from 4 of these sites (Khnorng Sroal, Phnom Pel, Damnak Samdech, and Khnang Tathan) provided the first estimation of the overall time depth of the practice.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss human occupation during the Early and Middle Holocene in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, based mainly on the data provided by excavated deposits from the Sodmein Cave, which produced an important Holocene stratigraphic sequence.

TL;DR: The Wendo Koshe younger pumice eruption in the Corbetti Caldera has been investigated in this paper, where the authors determined the age of the pumices by 14C radiometric dating of a paleosoil that developed on previous pyroclastic deposits buried by the pummice.

History, monumentality, and interaction in the appalachian summit middle woodland
TL;DR: In this article, the Garden Creek site in North Carolina has been used to reveal two co-eval diachronic changes: a shift from geometric earthwork construction to platform mound construction; and the production of special artifacts (mica, crystal quartz) to the consumption of exotic artifacts in association with platform mound ceremonialism.
