Horizontal gene transfer in eukaryotic evolution

TLDR
The number of well-supported cases of transfer from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, many with significant functional implications, is now expanding rapidly and major recent trends include the important role of HGT in adaptation to certain specialized niches and the highly variable impact of H GT in different lineages.Abstract:
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT; also known as lateral gene transfer) has had an important role in eukaryotic genome evolution, but its importance is often overshadowed by the greater prevalence and our more advanced understanding of gene transfer in prokaryotes. Recurrent endosymbioses and the generally poor sampling of most nuclear genes from diverse lineages have also complicated the search for transferred genes. Nevertheless, the number of well-supported cases of transfer from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, many with significant functional implications, is now expanding rapidly. Major recent trends include the important role of HGT in adaptation to certain specialized niches and the highly variable impact of HGT in different lineages.read more

Ghost lineages invalidate or reverse several results on gene flow
TL;DR: Simulation and data re-analysis show that when considering the more realistic condition that unsampled taxa are legion compared to sampled ones, the conclusion of evolutionary studies become unfounded or even reversed, illustrating the necessity to recognize the existence of ghosts in evolutionary studies.

Local adaptation mediated niche expansion in correlation with genetic richness
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between the genome, adaptation and the niche in Escherichia coli and found that local adaptation caused common niche expansion, whereas niche expansion for generality or speciality was decided by genetic richness.
