Abstract: A fundamental problem in optical, see-through augmented reality (AR) is characterizing how it affects the perception of spatial layout and depth. This problem is important because AR system developers need to both place graphics in arbitrary spatial relationships with real-world objects, and to know that users will perceive them in the same relationships. Furthermore, AR makes possible enhanced perceptual techniques that have no real-world equivalent, such as x-ray vision, where AR users are supposed to perceive graphics as being located behind opaque surfaces. This paper reviews and discusses protocols for measuring egocentric depth judgments in both virtual and augmented environments, and discusses the well-known problem of depth underestimation in virtual environments. It then describes two experiments that measured egocentric depth judgments in AR. Experiment I used a perceptual matching protocol to measure AR depth judgments at medium and far-field distances of 5 to 45 meters. The experiment studied the effects of upper versus lower visual field location, the x-ray vision condition, and practice on the task. The experimental findings include evidence for a switch in bias, from underestimating to overestimating the distance of AR-presented graphics, at ~ 23 meters, as well as a quantification of how much more difficult the x-ray vision condition makes the task. Experiment II used blind walking and verbal report protocols to measure AR depth judgments at distances of 3 to 7 meters. The experiment examined real-world objects, real-world objects seen through the AR display, virtual objects, and combined real and virtual objects. The results give evidence that the egocentric depth of AR objects is underestimated at these distances, but to a lesser degree than has previously been found for most virtual reality environments. The results are consistent with previous studies that have implicated a restricted field-of-view, combined with an inability for observers to scan the ground plane in a near-to-far direction, as explanations for the observed depth underestimation.

Abstract: Virus taxonomy emerged as a discipline in the middle of the twentieth century. Traditionally, classification by virus taxonomists has been focussed on the grouping of relatively closely related viruses. However, during the past few years, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) has recognized that the taxonomy it develops can be usefully extended to include the basal evolutionary relationships among distantly related viruses. Consequently, the ICTV has changed its Code to allow a 15-rank classification hierarchy that closely aligns with the Linnaean taxonomic system and may accommodate the entire spectrum of genetic divergence in the virosphere. The current taxonomies of three human pathogens, Ebola virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and herpes simplex virus 1 are used to illustrate the impact of the expanded rank structure. This new rank hierarchy of virus taxonomy will stimulate further research on virus origins and evolution, and vice versa, and could promote crosstalk with the taxonomies of cellular organisms.

Abstract: Scattering of polychromatic light by a medium whose dielectric susceptibility is a random function of position is considered within the accuracy of the first Born approximation. It is shown, in particular, that if the two-point spatial correlation function of the dielectric susceptibility has Gaussian form and the spectrum of the incident light has a Gaussian profile, the spectrum of the scattered light may be shifted toward the shorter or the longer wavelengths, depending on the angle of scattering. The results are analogous to those derived recently in connection with radiation from partially coherent sources [ Nature (London)326, 363 ( 1987)].

Abstract: With the growing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), flexible loads, and other emerging technologies, there are increasing complexities and uncertainties for modern power and energy systems. This brings great challenges to the operation and control. Besides, with the deployment of advanced sensor and smart meters, a large number of data are generated, which brings opportunities for novel data-driven methods to deal with complicated operation and control issues. Among them, reinforcement learning (RL) is one of the most widely promoted methods for control and optimization problems. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of RL in terms of basic ideas, various types of algorithms, and their applications in power and energy systems. The challenges and further works are also discussed.
