A Simple Procedure for Detecting the Presence of Cyclopropane Fatty Acids in Bacterial Lipids

Abstract: Four gram-negative bacterial species, including Escherichia coli strain B, Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Vibrio cholerae (comma) strain NIH 41, were investigated for fatty acid content by gas-liquid chromatography involving a preparatory technique which facilitated detection of cyclopropane fatty acids. Methyl esters of fatty acids were subjected to mild catalytic hydrogenation to eliminate unsaturates. Hydrogenation was followed by bromination which removed cyclopropane acids from chromatographic profile patterns. Lactobacillic acid (cis-11,12-methyleneoctanoate) and cis-9,10-methylenehexadecanoate, previously reported in lipids of E. coli and S. marcescens, were found in small amounts in P. fluorescens but were not detected in V. cholerae.

Strategic decisions in supply‐chain intelligence using knowledge management: an analytic‐network‐process framework

Abstract: Purpose – To investigate the linkage between organization performance criteria and the dimensions of agility, e‐supply‐chain drivers and knowledge management.Design/methodology/approach – The analytic network process is applied as the research methodology in the context of executive decisions that include qualitative and quantitative attributes. The decision model is presented, along with a case study with an e‐supply chain of a global telecommunications company.Findings – The study develops a framework for measuring the relative importance of a particular dimension based on the application of theoretical concepts from the information systems and management science literature to the digital, knowledge economy. Since contextual factors play a critical role in the design of effective knowledge‐management (KM) systems, technical and process solutions need to be customized to fit the organization performance criteria, dimensions of agility and supply chain drivers.Research limitations/implications – The model...

The role of social support following short-term inpatient treatment.

Abstract: The intensive, time-limited, short-term inpatient modality treatment for substance abuse appears to have positive outcomes despite its brevity. This study examined patient characteristics and posttreatment experiences to understand who is likely to benefit from this treatment and under what circumstances. Our sample included 748 patients in 12 short-term inpatient programs. Twenty-two percent of patients used cocaine at least weekly in the 1-year follow-up period, and an additional 9% drank frequently (compared with pretreatment rates of 69% and 15% respectively). Overall, patients' social support networks following treatment were more important factors than the pre- or during-treatment variables examined.

Abstract: Under the dehumanizing conditions of modernism, boredom has come to pervade the experience of everyday life. This collective boredom has spawned not only moments of illicit excitement—that is, ephemeral crimes committed against boredom itself—but larger efflorescences of political and cultural rebellion. In the same way, the machinery of modern criminology has organized a vast collectivity of boredom buttressed by rationalized methodologies and analytic abstraction. Against this institutionalized boredom, cultural criminology offers a rebellion of its own, and with it the possibility of intellectual excitement by way of methodological innovation, momentary insight and human engagement.
