Enantiospecific Formation of Trans 1,3-Disubstituted Tetrahydro-β-carbolines by the Pictet−Spengler Reaction and Conversion of Cis Diastereomers into Their Trans Counterparts by Scission of the C-1/N-2 Bond

Abstract: The factors which effect the stereoselective formation of trans-1-alkyl-2-benzyl-3-(alkoxycarbonyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolines and trans-3-(alkoxycarbonyl)-1-alkyl-2-(diphenylmethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolines by the Pictet−Spengler cyclization were examined by heating tryptophan derivatives with aldehydes of varied steric bulk under aprotic and acidic conditions, followed by determination of the ratio of cis to trans diastereomers so formed. The presence of a benzyl group at the Nb-nitrogen atom alters the diastereochemical outcome of this condensation to provide 100% trans stereoselectivity when the cyclization is carried out with cyclohexanecarboxaldehyde. Furthermore, when Nb-(diphenylmethyl)tryptophan isopropyl ester was condensed with aldehydes of any size, trans diastereomers are formed with 100% stereoselectively. Planning and control of behavior during deception

Abstract: Few behaviors have been found that consistently differentiate deceivers from truth-tellers. Consequently, recent research has focused upon identifying the factors that impact upon the display of behavioral correlates of deception. Following previous work in this area, four factors held to be important in this regard are reviewed: arousal, emotion, cognitive difficulty, and control. An integrative model that explicates the interrelations of these components is then developed. Finally, a study examining the effects of preparation and control on leakage during deception is presented. Planning of deception was found to relate to response latency and duration of eye contact. In addition, subjects appear to use inhibitory control processes to suppress the display of behavioral cues of deception.

Correlates of psychological influence: an illustration of the psychological climate approach to work environment perceptions

Abstract: : Correlates of subordinates' perceptions of their psychological influence on supervisors' decisions were examined for 126 subordinates in high technology jobs and 205 subordinates in low technology, production line jobs. Based on the psychological climate perspective of work environment perceptions, it was predicted that perceptions of psychological influence would be related significantly to (a) situational attributes, including supervisor behaviors, (b) individual characteristics, and (c) person by situation interactions. Results supported these assumptions and suggested that a cognitive information processing model assists in explaining environmental perceptions. (Author)
