Effects on permanent teeth after luxation injuries to the primary predecessors: a study in children assisted at an emergency service

Abstract: – Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the developmental disturbances in permanent teeth as a result of luxation injuries in the primary teeth predecessors. Materials and methods: A total of 5330 records, corresponding to 10 years attendance at the Emergency Center of Baby Clinic, Londrina State University, Brazil, were analyzed. Three hundred and eighty nine children were involved in this study, totaling 620 traumatized primary teeth. Clinical and radiographic examinations were carried out in the permanent successor teeth. Results: In total, 623 permanent teeth were examined and developmental disturbances were detected in 126 teeth (20.2%). The white or yellow-brown discoloration of enamel was the clinical disturbance most observed (78.0%) and the crown alteration most detected through radiographic analysis was hypoplasia (86.0%). Root alterations were rare; root dilaceration was observed in only one case. The age of the children when their primary teeth received damage varied between 6 and 36 months (P = 0.000325). Intrusive luxation and avulsion were related with most of the cases of sequelae in the successor permanent teeth (P = 0.000001). Conclusion: The results of the present investigation emphasize the special attention required for children who suffered dental trauma at an early age, especially in cases of intrusive luxation and avulsion.

In an attempt to better understand the aspects related to expert performance, researchers have investigated successful free throws and jump shots of various basketball players and identified movement variables that contribute to their success. The purpose of this study was to complete a systematic review of the scientific literature on the basketball free throw and jump shot for the purpose of revealing the critical components of shooting that coaches, teachers, and players should focus on when teaching, learning, practising, and performing a jump shot. Erliquiose no Brasil

Abstract: Erliquiose e uma doenca causada por rickettsias pertencentes ao genero Ehrlichia. No Brasil, estudos sorologicos e moleculares tem avaliado a ocorrencia de especies de Ehrlichia em caes, gatos, animais selvagens e seres humanos. Ehrlichia canis e a principal especie em caes no Brasil, embora a infeccao por E. ewingii tenha, recentemente, despertado suspeita em cinco caes. O DNA de E. chaffeensis foi detectado e caracterizado em cervo-do-pantanal, enquanto que E. muris e E. ruminantium ainda nao foram identificadas no Brasil. A erliquiose monocitica canina causada pela E. canis parece ser altamente endemica em muitas regioes do Brasil, embora dados de prevalencia nao estejam disponiveis em muitas delas. O DNA de E. canis tambem foi detectado e caracterizado em tres gatos domesticos, enquanto anticorpos contra E. canis foram detectados em felideos neotropicais de vida livre. Evidencias sorologicas sugerem a ocorrencia de erliquiose humana no Brasil, entretanto, o agente etiologico ainda nao foi identificado. A melhoria do diagnostico molecular promovera a identificacao e caracterizacao de especies associadas a erliquiose humana no Brasil.

Impacto de oito semanas de treinamento com pesos sobre a forca muscular de homens e mulheres

Abstract: O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar o impacto de oito semanas de treinamento com pesos (TP) sobre a forca muscular. Para tanto, 23 homens (20,7 ± 1,7 anos) e 15 mulheres (20,9 ± 2,1 anos), aparentemente saudaveis e moderadamente ativos (atividade fisica regular < 2 vezes por semana), foram submetidos a um programa de TP composto por 10 exercicios para os diferentes grupos musculares durante oito semanas consecutivas. Tres series de 8-12 RM foram executadas em cada exercicio, em tres sessoes semanais intervaladas a cada 48 horas. A forca muscular foi determinada pre e pos-treinamento por meio de testes de 1-RM nos exercicios supino em banco horizontal, agachamento e rosca direta de biceps, apos cinco sessoes de familiarizacao. Aumentos na forca muscular foram identificados, em ambos os sexos, nos tres exercicios investigados, bem como no somatorio da carga total levantada (P < 0,01). Apesar de os homens apresentarem forca absoluta maior do que as mulheres em todos os exercicios analisados, os ganhos observados ao longo do tempo foram maiores no sexo feminino (14,7 vs. 7,6% no agachamento; 17,2 vs. 11,0% no supino em banco horizontal; 20,4 vs. 14,0% na rosca direta de biceps). Os resultados sugerem que o periodo de oito semanas de TP parece ser suficiente para promover modificacoes significantes na forca muscular de homens e mulheres, em diferentes segmentos corporais (membros inferiores, tronco e membros superiores).
