Abstract: In serum samples obtained from all the healthy humans, horses, dogs, and donkeys present on three farms in the Pedreira Municipality, an endemic area for Brazilian spotted fever, an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) detected antibodies against Rickettsia rickettsii in 17 (77.3%) horses, 5 (31.3%) dogs (titers ranging from 64 to 4,048), and none of 4 donkeys or 50 humans. Five canine and eight equine sera with high antibody titers to R. rickettsii were also tested by IFA against R. bellii, R. akari, and R. africae antigens. Sera from two horses and two dogs that showed similar high antibody titers against two rickettsial antigens were evaluated after cross-absorption. Sera from seven horses and two dogs contained antibodies specific for R. rickettsii, and one dog serum had antibodies against a Rickettsia species very closely related to R. africae. The latter may have been caused by infection with the recently identified COOPERI strain.

Abstract: The genus Bradyrhizobium encompasses a variety of bacteria that can live in symbiotic and endophytic associations with legumes and non-legumes, and are characterized by physiological and symbiotic versatility and broad geographical distribution. However, despite indications of great genetic variability within the genus, only eight species have been described, mainly because of the highly conserved nature of the 16S rRNA gene. In this study, 169 strains isolated from 43 different legumes were analysed by rep-PCR with the BOX primer, by sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) and by multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of four housekeeping genes, glnII, recA, atpD and dnaK. Considering a cut-off at a level of 70 % similarity, 80 rep-PCR profiles were distinguished, which, together with type strains, were clustered at a very low level of similarity (24 %). In both single and concatenated analyses of the 16S rRNA gene and ITS sequences, two large groups were formed, with bootstrap support of 99 % in the concatenated analysis. The first group included the type and/or reference strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum, B. betae, B. liaoningense, B. canariense and B. yuanmingense and B. japonicum USDA 110, and the second group included strains related to Bradyrhizobium elkanii USDA 76(T), B. pachyrhizi PAC48(T) and B. jicamae PAC68(T). Similar results were obtained with MLSA of glnII, recA, atpD and dnaK. Greatest variability was observed when the atpD gene was amplified, and five strains related to B. elkanii revealed a level of variability never reported before. Another important observation was that a group composed of strains USDA 110, SEMIA 5080 and SEMIA 6059, all isolated from soybean, clustered in all six trees with high bootstrap support and were quite distinct from the clusters that included B. japonicum USDA 6(T). The results confirm that MLSA is a rapid and reliable way of providing information on phylogenetic relationships and of identifying rhizobial strains potentially representative of novel species.

Neste artigo, sao abordadas as relacoes entre informacao, conhecimento, aprendizagem organizacional e inovacao, assim como o entorno em que as redes sociais se realizam. Essas relacoes constituem o foco das ligacoes que se estabelecem nas redes. A interacao entre os atores promove o compartilhamento da informacao e do conhecimento, fomentando o desenvolvimento de inovacoes.

Abstract: The frequency of group A bovine rotavirus (gpA BRV) in calves from 1998 to 2002 was determined by the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique in 2177 faecal samples, of which 1898 samples were diarrhoeic and 279 were of normal consistency (control group) that were collected from asymptomatic calves for comparative purposes. The animals were from beef and dairy cattle herds (n = 321) from 158 counties in seven States (Parana, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goias and Rondonia) and four Brazilian geographical regions (south, south-east, centre-west, and north). GpA BRV was detected in 19.4% (369/1898; p = 0.0001) of the samples collected in calves with diarrhoea and in only 2.2% (6/279; p = 0.0001) of the faeces with normal consistency. The proportion of positive samples collected from beef and dairy cattle herds was 22.8% (205/899; p = 0.0001) and 16.4% (169/999; p = 0.0005), respectively. In relation to age, a higher prevalence of infections was found in calves up to 30 days old, where 33.0% (189/573; p = 0.0001) and 20.2% (138/683; p = 0.0001) of the diarrhoeic faecal samples from beef and dairy cattle herds, respectively, were positive for gpA BRV. These results show the possible importance of inclusion of gpA BRV in the management of neonatal calf diarrhoea in Brazilian cattle herds.
