Abstract: THE wound response of several plant species involves the activation of proteinase inhibitor (pin) genes and the accumulation of pin proteins at the local site of injury and systemically throughout the unwounded aerial regions of the plant1,2. It has been suggested that a mobile chemical signal is the causal agent linking the local wound stimulus to the distant systemic response, and candidates such as oligosaccharides3, abscisic acid4 and a polypeptide5,6 have been put forward. But the speed of transmission is high for the transport of a chemical signal in the phloem. The wound response of tomato plants can be inhibited by salicylic acid7 and agents like fusicoccin that affect ion transport8, and wounding by heat9 or physical injury produces electrical activity that has similarities to the epithelial conduction system10 used to transmit a stimulus in the defence responses of some lower animals11. Here we design experiments to distinguish between a phloem-transmissible chemical signal and a physically propagated signal based on electrical activity. We show that translocation in the phloem of tomato seedlings can be completely inhibited without effect on the systemic accumulation of pin transcripts and pin activity, and without hindrance to propagated electrical signals.

Abstract: We study information demand and supply at the firm and market level using data for 30 of the largest stocks traded on NYSE and NASDAQ. Demand is approximated in a novel manner from weekly internet search volume time series drawn from the recently released Google Trends database. Our paper makes contributions in four main directions. First, although information demand and supply tend to be positively correlated, their dynamic interactions do not allow conclusive inferences about the information discovery process. Second, demand for information at the market level is significantly positively related to historical and implied measures of volatility and to trading volume, even after controlling for market return and information supply. Third, information demand increases significantly during periods of higher returns. Fourth, analysis of the expected variance risk premium confirms for the first time empirically the hypothesis that investors demand more information as their level of risk aversion increases.

Abstract: We calculated extraction and production rates of bushmeat species in two main tropical, moist-for- est regions, the Amazon and Congo basins. Extraction was estimated from the average number of animals consumed per person per year from anthropological studies that reported animal kills brought into settle- ments in the regions. We calculated extraction rates (kg/km 2 /year) for 57 and 31 mammalian taxa in the Congo and Amazon, respectively. We then examined the sustainability of these extraction rates by basin and by taxa, using extraction-to-production ( E:P ) mass-balance equations. Production (tonnes/year) was calculated as the product of r max (the intrinsic rate of natural increase), mammal biomass, and total area of forest in each region. Species exploitation rates at specific body masses were significantly greater in the Congo than in the Amazon. The E:P ratio for the Congo was 2.4, 30 times the Amazon's ratio of 0.081. Thus, Congo Basin mammals must annually produce approximately 93% of their body mass to balance current extraction rates, whereas Amazonian mammals must produce only 4% of their body mass. We calculated sustainability levels derived from Robinson and Redford's harvest model for each taxa. On a basin-wide level, 60% and none of the mammal taxa in the Congo and Amazon basins, respectively, were exploited unsustainably. To evaluate the effect of error on the estimates of E:P , we conducted a sensitivity analysis, which suggests that the mass- balance was most sensitive to error in standing stock but that our results are robust. We estimated that over 5 million tons of wild mammal meat feed millions in Neotropical (0.15 million) and Afrotropical (4.9 mil- lion) forests annually. Our Congo basin estimates are four times higher than those calculated for the region by other workers, and we conclude that the current situation of bushmeat extraction in African rain forests is more precarious than previously thought.

Abstract: The activation of pro matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) by sequential proteolysis of the propeptide blocking the active site cleft is regarded as one of the key levels of regulation of these proteinases. Potential physiological mechanisms including cell-associated plasmin generation by urokinase-like plasminogen activator, or the action of cell surface MT1-MMPs appear to be involved in the initiation of cascades of pro MMP activation. Gelatinase A, collagenase 3 and gelatinase B may be activated by MT-MMP based mechanisms, as evidenced by both biochemical and cell based studies. Hence the regulation of MT-MMPs themselves becomes critical to the determination of MMP activity. This includes activation, assembly at the cell surfaces as TIMP-2 complexes and subsequent inactivation by proteolysis or TIMP inhibition.

Abstract: An objective classification scheme of the atmospheric circulation affecting Portugal, between 1946 and 1990, is presented, where daily circulation is characterized through the use of a set of indices associated with the direction and vorticity of the geostrophic flow. The synoptic characteristics and the frequency of ten basic circulation weather types (CWTs) are discussed, as well as the amount of precipitation associated with each type between 1957 and 1986. It is shown that the anticyclonic (A) type, although being the most frequent class in winter (37%), gives a rather small (less then 16%) contribution to the winter precipitation amount, observed on a daily basis. On the other hand, the three wettest CWTs, namely the cyclonic (C), southwesterly (SW) and westerly (W) types, together representing only 32% of all winter days, account for more than 62% of the observed daily precipitation. Results obtained highlight the existence of strong links between the interannual variability of monthly precipitation and interannual variability of CWTs. Multiple regression models, developed for 18 stations, show the ability of modelling monthly winter precipitation through the exclusive use, as predictors, of the wet CWTs (i.e. C, SW and W). The observed decreasing trend of March precipitation is also analysed and shown to be especially associated with the decrease of the three wet weather types. The anomalous low (high) frequency of wet CWTs during the hydrological year is shown to be strongly related with the occurrence of extreme dry (wet) years in Portugal, which had important impacts on Portuguese agriculture. Overall, the results suggest that the precipitation regime over Portugal, including interannual variability, trends and extremes, may be adequately explained in terms of variability of a fairly small number of circulation weather patterns. On the other hand, observed contrasts in the spatial distribution of correlations between frequency of wet CWTs and rainfall amounts suggest that precipitation regimes are of a different nature in northern and southern regions of Portugal; the former possessing an orographic origin and the latter being associated to cyclogenetic activity.
