Abstract: A tracking algorithm for identification of vessel contours in digital coronary arteriograms was developed and validated. Given an initial start-of-search point, the tracking process was fully automated by utilizing the spatial continuity of the vessel's centerline, orientation, diameter, and density. The incremental sections along a major vessel were sequentially identified, based on the assumptions of geometric similarity and continuation between adjacent incremental sections. The algorithm consisted of an extrapolation-update process which was guided by a matched filter. The filter parameters were adapted to the measured lumen width. The tracking process was robust and extremely efficient as indicated by test results on synthetic images, digital subtraction angiograms, and cineangiograms. The algorithm provided accurate measurement of lumen width and percent stenosis that was relatively invariant to the vessel's orientation, dynamic range, background variation, and degree of blurring. >

Abstract: Atmospheric gases trapped in polar ice at the firn to ice transition layer are enriched in heavy isotopes (nitrogen-15 and oxygen-18) and in heavy gases (O2/N2 and Ar/N2 ratios) relative to the free atmosphere. The maximum enrichments observed follow patterns predicted for gravitational equilibrium at the base of the firn layer, as calculated from the depth to the transition layer and the temperature in the firn. Gas ratios exhibit both positive and negative enrichments relative to air: the negative enrichments of heavy gases are consistent with observed artifacts of vacuum stripping of gases from fractured ice and with the relative values of molecular diameters that govern capillary transport. These two models for isotopic and elemental fractionation provide a basis for understanding the initial enrichments of carbon-13 and oxygen-18 in trapped CO2, CH4, and O2 in ice cores, which must be known in order to decipher ancient atmospheric isotopic ratios.

Abstract: The circulation of water masses in the northeastern North Atlantic Ocean has a strong influence on global climate owing to the northward transport of warm subtropical water to high latitudes. But the ocean circulation at depths below the reach of satellite observations is difficult to measure, and only recently have comprehensive, direct observations of whole ocean basins been possible. Here we present quantitative maps of the absolute velocities at two levels in the northeastern North Atlantic as obtained from acoustically tracked floats. We find that most of the mean flow transported northward by the Gulf Stream system at the thermocline level (about 600 m depth) remains within the subpolar region, and only relatively little enters the Rockall trough or the Nordic seas. Contrary to previous work, our data indicate that warm, saline water from the Mediterranean Sea reaches the high latitudes through a combination of narrow slope currents and mixing processes. At both depths under investigation, currents cross the Mid-Atlantic Ridge preferentially over deep gaps in the ridge, demonstrating that sea-floor topography can constrain even upper-ocean circulation patterns.

Abstract: Highly penetrating cosmic ray muons shower the Earth at the rate of 10,000 m −2 min −1 at sea level. In our previous work (Nature 422 (2003) 277; Rev. Sci. Instr. 74(10) (2003) 4294; Cosmic Ray Muon Radiography for Contraband Detection, in: Proceedings of AccApp’03, San Diego, CA, June 2003), we presented a novel muon radiography technique which exploits the multiple Coulomb scattering of these particles for nondestructive inspection without the use of artificial radiation. In this paper, we describe the concept of and theory behind cosmic ray muon radiography. We discuss the information carried by the scattered muons and our approaches for exploiting that information with image reconstruction algorithms. We discuss preliminary and advanced reconstruction algorithms, which take advantage of the scattering angle, scattering location, and locations where strongly scattered muons cross paths. Our algorithms are validated with both experimental demonstrations and Monte Carlo simulations. Based upon the results from both the experiment and simulations, we conclude that scattering muon radiography can be useful for both material discrimination and fast (minute order) detection of compact high- Z objects. Our ray-crossing algorithm, which highlights locations where strongly scattered muons cross paths, is effective even in the presence of a medium- Z background matrix.

Abstract: Birds during migration must satisfy the high energy and nutrient demands associated with repeated, intensive flight while often experiencing unpredictable variation in food supply and food quality. Solutions to such different challenges may often be physiologically incompatible. For example, increased food intake and gut size are primarily responsible for satisfying the high energy and nutrient demands associated with migration in birds. However, short-term fasting or food restriction during flight may cause partial atrophy of the gut that may limit utilization of ingested food energy and nutrients. We review the evidence available on the effects of long- and short-term changes in food quality and quantity on digestive performance in migratory birds, and the importance of digestive constraints in limiting the tempo of migration in birds. Another important physiological consequence of feeding in birds is the effect of diet on body composition dynamics during migration. Recent evidence suggests that birds utilize and replenish both protein and fat reserves during migration, and diet quality influences the rate of replenishment of both these reserves. We conclude that diet and phenotypic flexibility in both body composition and the digestive system of migratory birds are important in allowing birds to successfully overcome the often-conflicting physiological challenges of migration.
