Inhibition of Leaf Senescence by Autoregulated Production of Cytokinin

Abstract: Controlling expression of IPT, a gene encoding isopentenyl transferase (the enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in cytokinin biosynthesis), with a senescence-specific promoter results in the suppression of leaf senescence. Transgenic tobacco plants expressing this chimeric gene do not exhibit the developmental abnormalities usually associated with IPT expression because the system is autoregulatory. Because sufficient cytokinin is produced to retard senescence, the activity of the senescence-specific promoter is attenuated. Senescence-retarded leaves exhibit a prolonged, photosynthetically active life-span. This result demonstrates that endogenously produced cytokinin can regulate senescence and provides a system to specifically manipulate the senescence program.

Gender differences in sexuality: a meta-analysis.

Abstract: This meta-analysis surveyed 177 usable sources that reported data on gender differences on 21 different measures of sexual attitudes and behaviors. The largest gender difference was in incidence of masturbation: Men had the greater incidence (d = .96). There was also a large gender difference in attitudes toward casual sex: Males had considerably more permissive attitudes (d = .81). There were no gender differences in attitudes toward homosexuality or in sexual satisfaction. Most other gender differences were in the small-to-moderate range. Gender differences narrowed from the 1960s to the 1980s for many variables. Chodorow's neoanalytic theory, sociobiology, social learning theory, social role theory, and script theory are discussed in relation to these findings.

Space vector PWM control of dual three phase induction machine using vector space decomposition

Abstract: The technique of vector space decomposition control of voltage source inverter fed dual three-phase induction machines is presented in this paper. By vector space decomposition, the analytical modeling and control of the machine are accomplished in three two-dimensional orthogonal subspaces and the dynamics of the electromechanical energy conversion related and the nonelectromechanical energy conversion related machine variables are thereby totally decoupled. A space vector PWM technique is also developed based on the vector space decomposition to limit the 5th, 7th, 17th, 19th,... harmonic currents which in such a system would be otherwise difficult to control. The techniques developed in this paper can be generalized for the control of an induction machine with an arbitrary number of phases. >
