Abstract: Various types of moments have been used to recognize image patterns in a number of applications. A number of moments are evaluated and some fundamental questions are addressed, such as image-representation ability, noise sensitivity, and information redundancy. Moments considered include regular moments, Legendre moments, Zernike moments, pseudo-Zernike moments, rotational moments, and complex moments. Properties of these moments are examined in detail and the interrelationships among them are discussed. Both theoretical and experimental results are presented. >

TL;DR: These studies identify TSPs as CNS synaptogenic proteins, provide evidence that astrocytes are important contributors to synaptogenesis within the developing CNS, and suggest that TSP-1 and -2 act as a permissive switch that times CNSsynaptogenesis by enabling neuronal molecules to assemble into synapses within a specific window of CNS development.

TL;DR: In the Southern Great Plains 1997 Hydrology Experiment, four different types of eddy-covariance systems were set up side-by-side and all of them under-measured sensible and latent heat fluxes by similar amounts.

TL;DR: Prevention of binding between cell surface heparan sulfate and bFGF substantially reduces binding of fibroblast growth factor to its cell-surface receptors, blocks the ability of bF GF to support the growth of Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts, and induces terminal differentiation of MM14 skeletal muscle cells, which is normally repressed by fibro Blast growth factor.
Abstract: Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) binds to heparan sulfate proteoglycans at the cell surface and to receptors with tyrosine kinase activity. Prevention of binding between cell surface heparan sulfate and bFGF (i) substantially reduces binding of fibroblast growth factor to its cell-surface receptors, (ii) blocks the ability of bFGF to support the growth of Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts, and (iii) induces terminal differentiation of MM14 skeletal muscle cells, which is normally repressed by fibroblast growth factor. These results indicate that cell surface heparan sulfate is directly involved in bFGF cell signaling.

TL;DR: The power of ENU mutagenesis combined with the ability to clone murine genes by map position provides a generally applicable approach to study complex behavior in mammals.
Abstract: In a search for genes that regulate circadian rhythms in mammals, the progeny of mice treated with N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) were screened for circadian clock mutations. A semidominant mutation, Clock, that lengthens circadian period and abolishes persistence of rhythmicity was identified. Clock segregated as a single gene that mapped to the midportion of mouse chromosome 5, a region syntenic to human chromosome 4. The power of ENU mutagenesis combined with the ability to clone murine genes by map position provides a generally applicable approach to study complex behavior in mammals.
