Gut microbiota in neurodegenerative disorders.

TLDR
This review summarizes the current understanding of the role of gut microbiota in neurodegenerative disorders and possible intervention strategies and reveals that intake of probiotics may help in the integrity of intestinal and BBB thus ameliorating the above neurodegenersative disorders.

Probiotics modulate the microbiota-gut-brain axis and improve memory deficits in aged SAMP8 mice.

TL;DR: Targeting gut microbiota with probiotics may have a therapeutic potential for the deficits of the microbiota–gut–brain axis and cognitive function in aging, and that its mechanism is associated with inhibition of both TLR4- and RIG-I-mediated NF-κB signaling pathway and inflammatory responses.

Gut microbiota-brain axis in depression: The role of neuroinflammation

TL;DR: This review will focus on studies that show the relationship of inflammation with the gut microbiota–brain axis and its relation with MDD.

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis and Alzheimer's Disease: Neuroinflammation Is to Blame?

TL;DR: In this article, a review highlights a contribution of the disturbances in the microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and highlights the need for new treatment targets and therapies for AD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gut dysbiosis in Huntington's disease: associations among gut microbiota, cognitive performance and clinical outcomes

TL;DR: The findings suggest an altered gut microbiome in Huntington’s disease gene expansion carriers, which highlight the importance of gut biomarkers and raise interesting questions regarding the role of the gut in Huntington's disease, and whether it may be a potential target for future therapeutic intervention.

Staging of brain pathology related to sporadic Parkinson’s disease

TL;DR: This study traces the course of the pathology in incidental and symptomatic Parkinson cases proposing a staging procedure based upon the readily recognizable topographical extent of the lesions.

Microbial ecology: Human gut microbes associated with obesity

TL;DR: It is shown that the relative proportion of Bacteroidetes is decreased in obese people by comparison with lean people, and that this proportion increases with weight loss on two types of low-calorie diet.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diversity of the human intestinal microbial flora.

TL;DR: A majority of the bacterial sequences corresponded to uncultivated species and novel microorganisms, and significant intersubject variability and differences between stool and mucosa community composition were discovered.
