A Commensal Bacterium Promotes Virulence of an Opportunistic Pathogen via Cross-Respiration

TL;DR: The genetic requirements for the pathogenic bacterium Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans to cause disease when coinfecting with the commensal bacterium Streptococcus gordonii were determined using global mutant fitness profiling.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reduce, Induce, Thrive: Bacterial Redox Sensing during Pathogenesis.

TL;DR: The abundance of oxidants and reductants must be balanced for an organism to thrive and bacteria have evolved methods to mitigate their deleterious consequences through the expression of detoxification enzymes, antioxidants, and systems to repair or degrade damaged proteins and DNA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dysbiosis in the Gut Microbiota of Soil Fauna Explains the Toxicity of Tire Tread Particles

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that TPs had an adverse effect on the survival and reproduction of the soil worms and disturbed the microbiota of the worm guts and surrounding soil, and showed that TP exposure caused an enrichment of microbial genera associated with opportunistic pathogenesis in theworm guts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mutual interplay between IL-17-producing γδT cells and microbiota orchestrates oral mucosal homeostasis.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that even though the gingiva develops after birth, the majority of gingival γδT cells are fetal thymus-derived Vγ6+ cells, and to a lesser extent Vγ1+ and Vγ4- cells, which suggest that oral mucosal homeostasis is shaped by reciprocal interplays between γ ΔT cells and local microbiota.

One-step inactivation of chromosomal genes in Escherichia coli K-12 using PCR products

TL;DR: A simple and highly efficient method to disrupt chromosomal genes in Escherichia coli in which PCR primers provide the homology to the targeted gene(s), which should be widely useful, especially in genome analysis of E. coli and other bacteria.
Journal ArticleDOI

A broad host range mobilization system for in vivo genetic engineering: transposon mutagenesis in Gram negative bacteria

TL;DR: In this paper, a new vector strategy for the insertion of foreign genes into the genomes of gram negative bacteria not closely related to Escherichia coli was developed, which can utilize any gram negative bacterium as a recipient for conjugative DNA transfer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diversity of the human intestinal microbial flora.

TL;DR: A majority of the bacterial sequences corresponded to uncultivated species and novel microorganisms, and significant intersubject variability and differences between stool and mucosa community composition were discovered.
Journal ArticleDOI

Obesity alters gut microbial ecology

TL;DR: Analysis of the microbiota of genetically obese ob/ob mice, lean ob/+ and wild-type siblings, and their ob/+ mothers, all fed the same polysaccharide-rich diet, indicates that obesity affects the diversity of the gut microbiota and suggests that intentional manipulation of community structure may be useful for regulating energy balance in obese individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular-phylogenetic characterization of microbial community imbalances in human inflammatory bowel diseases

TL;DR: Patient stratification by GI microbiota provides further evidence that CD represents a spectrum of disease states and suggests that treatment of some forms of IBD may be facilitated by redress of the detected microbiological imbalances.
