TL;DR: It is shown that the carbon-black-based superhydrophobic gauze was able to float on the surface of water and selectively heat the surface water under irradiation, resulting in an enhanced evaporation rate.
Abstract: Efficient solar evaporation plays an indispensable role in nature as well as the industry process. However, the traditional evaporation process depends on the total temperature increase of bulk water. Recently, localized heating at the air–water interface has been demonstrated as a potential strategy for the improvement of solar evaporation. Here, we show that the carbon-black-based superhydrophobic gauze was able to float on the surface of water and selectively heat the surface water under irradiation, resulting in an enhanced evaporation rate. The fabrication process of the superhydrophobic black gauze was low-cost, scalable, and easy-to-prepare. Control experiments were conducted under different light intensities, and the results proved that the floating black gauze achieved an evaporation rate 2–3 times higher than that of the traditional process. A higher temperature of the surface water was observed in the floating gauze group, revealing a main reason for the evaporation enhancement. Furthermore, th...

TL;DR: High energy efficiency and evaporation rate under high salinity is achieved through an energy reutilizing strategy based on interfacial water film inhomogeneity on a biomimetic structure, indicating the potential for sustainable and practical applications.
Abstract: Solar-driven water evaporation represents an environmentally benign method of water purification/desalination. However, the efficiency is limited by increased salt concentration and accumulation. Here, we propose an energy reutilizing strategy based on a bio-mimetic 3D structure. The spontaneously formed water film, with thickness inhomogeneity and temperature gradient, fully utilizes the input energy through Marangoni effect and results in localized salt crystallization. Solar-driven water evaporation rate of 2.63 kg m−2 h−1, with energy efficiency of >96% under one sun illumination and under high salinity (25 wt% NaCl), and water collecting rate of 1.72 kg m−2 h−1 are achieved in purifying natural seawater in a closed system. The crystalized salt freely stands on the 3D evaporator and can be easily removed. Additionally, energy efficiency and water evaporation are not influenced by salt accumulation thanks to an expanded water film inside the salt, indicating the potential for sustainable and practical applications. Solar-driven water evaporation technology still faces main challenges of limited efficiency and salt fouling. Here the authors achieve high energy efficiency and evaporation rate under high salinity through an energy reutilizing strategy based on interfacial water film inhomogeneity on a biomimetic structure.

TL;DR: A greatly enhanced thermoelectric performance in a BiCuSeO system is reported, realized by improving carrier mobility through modulation doping, which leads to a broad, high power factor.
Abstract: We report a greatly enhanced thermoelectric performance in a BiCuSeO system, realized by improving carrier mobility through modulation doping. The heterostructures of the modulation doped sample make charge carriers transport preferentially in the low carrier concentration area, which increases carrier mobility by a factor of 2 while maintaining the carrier concentration similar to that in the uniformly doped sample. The improved electrical conductivity and retained Seebeck coefficient synergistically lead to a broad, high power factor ranging from 5 to 10 μW cm(-1) K(-2). Coupling the extraordinarily high power factor with the extremely low thermal conductivity of ∼0.25 W m(-1) K(-1) at 923 K, a high ZT ≈ 1.4 is achieved in a BiCuSeO system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of the modified system is studied using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energy √s=13 TeV, collected at the LHC in 2015 and 2016.
Abstract: The CMS muon detector system, muon reconstruction software, and high-level trigger underwent significant changes in 2013–2014 in preparation for running at higher LHC collision energy and instantaneous luminosity. The performance of the modified system is studied using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energy √s=13 TeV, collected at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The measured performance parameters, including spatial resolution, efficiency, and timing, are found to meet all design specifications and are well reproduced by simulation. Despite the more challenging running conditions, the modified muon system is found to perform as well as, and in many aspects better than, previously. We dedicate this paper to the memory of Prof. Alberto Benvenuti, whose work was fundamental for the CMS muon detector.

TL;DR: In this article, a bismuth-based photocatalyst, Bi24O31Br10, with reasonable reduction activity was reported, which showed that the bottom of the conduction band fits the electric potential requirements for splitting water to H-2.
Abstract: The original bismuth-based oxyhalide, known as the Sillen family, is an important photocatalyst due to its high photocatalytic oxidation activity. Here, we report a bismuth-based photocatalyst, Bi24O31Br10, with reasonable reduction activity. The photoreduction capability of Bi24O31Br10 in H-2 evolution from water reduction is 133.9 mu mol after 40 h under visible light irradiation. Bi24O31Br10 presents the highest activity among Bi2O3, BiOBr, and Bi24O31Br10 in photocatalytic reduction of the Cr (VI) test, and Cr (VI) ions are totally removed in 40 mm. The Mott-Schottky test shows the bottom of the conduction band fits the electric potential requirements for splitting water to H-2. First-principles calculations indicate the conduction band of Bi24O31Br10 mainly consists of hybridized Bi 6p and Br 4s orbitals, which may contribute to the uplifting of the conduction band.
