Abstract: The acoustic emission (AE)-based technique is considered to be a promising way to real-time monitoring of microstructural changes and damage evolution in Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs). The present paper proposes a testing protocol that combines acousto-ultrasonics (AU) and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, with a view to obtain both global and local definite characteristics on damage modes and kinetics. It is developed and assessed on SiC/SiC minicomposites, which are appropriate test specimens to establish sound relations between mechanical behavior and damage modes. AU wave velocity measurements provide a global measure of matrix cracking damage and the relations between crack growth and damage characteristics. AE monitoring allows accurate localization of AE sources taking into account wave velocity dependence to damage as well as differentiation of the damage modes, which control the mechanical behavior. Finally, multivariate analysis of AE data allowed classification of signals into clusters, which were successfully associated to the various damage modes.

Abstract: The present works report the first structure–prop-erty relationship study of a key class of organic semiconductors , that is, the four spirobifluorene positional isomers possessing a para-, meta-or ortho-linkage. The remarkable and surprising impact of the ring bridging and of the linkages on the electronic properties of the regioisomers has been particularly highlighted and rationalised. The impact of the ring bridging on the photophysical properties has been stressed with notably the different influence of the linkages and the bridge on the singlet and triplet excited states. The first member of a new family of spirobifluorenes substituted in the 1-position, which presents better performance in blue phosphorescent OLEDs than those of its regioisomers, is reported. These features highlight not only the great potential of 1-substituted spirobifluorenes, but also the remarkable impact of regioisomerism on electronic properties.

Abstract: The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is an atom-like system in the solid-state which specific spin properties can be efficiently used as a sensitive magnetic sensor. An external magnetic field induces Zeeman shifts of the NV center levels which can be measured using Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR). In this work, we exploit the ODMR signal of an ensemble of NV centers in order to quantitatively map the vectorial structure of a magnetic field produced by a sample close to the surface of a CVD diamond hosting a thin layer of NV centers. The reconstruction of the magnetic field is based on a maximum-likelihood technique which exploits the response of the four intrinsic orientations of the NV center inside the diamond lattice. The sensitivity associated to a 1 {\mu}m^2 area of the doped layer, equivalent to a sensor consisting of approximately 10^4 NV centers, is of the order of 2 {\mu}T/sqrt{Hz}. The spatial resolution of the imaging device is 400 nm, limited by the numerical aperture of the optical microscope which is used to collect the photoluminescence of the NV layer. The versatility of the sensor is illustrated by the accurate reconstruction of the magnetic field created by a DC current inside a copper wire deposited on the diamond sample.
