TL;DR: Two-dimensional semiconductor activated vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers where both the gain material and the lasing characteristics are two-dimensional are demonstrated, which represents a major step towards practical optoelectronic applications of 2D semiconductor lasers.
Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are opening a new platform for revitalizing widely spread optoelectronic applications. The realisation of room-temperature vertical 2D lasing from monolayer semiconductors is fundamentally interesting and highly desired for appealing on-chip laser applications such as optical interconnects and supercomputing. Here, we present room-temperature low-threshold lasing from 2D semiconductor activated vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) under continuous-wave pumping. 2D lasing is achieved from a 2D semiconductor. Structurally, dielectric oxides were used to construct the half-wavelength-thick cavity and distributed Bragg reflectors, in favour of single-mode operation and ultralow optical loss; in the cavity centre, the direct-bandgap monolayer WS2 was embedded as the gain medium, compatible with the planar VCSEL configuration and the monolithic integration technology. This work demonstrates 2D semiconductor activated VCSELs with desirable emission characteristics, which represents a major step towards practical optoelectronic applications of 2D semiconductor lasers. Two-dimensional materials have recently emerged as interesting materials for optoelectronic applications. Here, Shang et al. demonstrate two-dimensional semiconductor activated vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers where both the gain material and the lasing characteristics are two-dimensional.

TL;DR: In this paper, the structural applications of FRP composites as major load-carrying members (therefore strengthening of existing structures is not included) in aggressive environments are reviewed and comparatively studied for environmental effects on FRP composite at the structural level mainly about joints and connections.
Abstract: Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become known for their specific advantages for civil infrastructure construction. High corrosion resistance in particular is one such strength, which has led to successful applications worldwide. This paper focuses on the structural applications of FRP composites as major load-carrying members (therefore strengthening of existing structures is not included) in aggressive environments. It is review and comparatively studied for environmental effects on FRP composites at the structural level mainly about joints and connections, including elevated environmental temperatures, humidity and water immersion, and ultraviolet (UV) exposure. The quantifications of such environmental effects on structural responses further assist development of large scale civil structures made from FRP composites. We therefore also present a few implementations of FRP composites in civil infrastructure construction including i) FRP truss and frame structures in high humility areas, ii) FRP composite bumper systems for bridge piers, iii) floating FRP structures for solar panels, iv) FRP steel composite piles for foundation applications, and v) FRP sheets, planks and piles for modular assembly of a retaining wall. These results are introduced as initiatives from own experiences, with the aim of demonstrating their applicability and providing examples for others with similar needs.

TL;DR: In this article, the octadentate ligand tetrakis[(3,5-dicarboxyphenoxy)methyl] methane (H8L), a rare (4,8)-scu type microporous coordination polymer, was synthesized and structurally characterized.
Abstract: By using the octadentate ligand tetrakis[(3,5-dicarboxyphenoxy)methyl] methane (H8L), a rare (4,8)-scu type microporous coordination polymer, [In2L][NH2(CH3)2]2·(DMF)4(H2O)16, was synthesized and structurally characterized. The compound possesses an anionic three-dimensional open framework and exhibits permanent porosity with selective gas adsorption of CO2 over CH4. It exhibited strong fluorescence emission upon excitation at RT, and a selective, efficient emission quenching response towards nitroaromatic explosives.
