Abstract: We examine the impact of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on college students’ drinking behavior using a nationally representative sample of American institutions. While success in intercollegiate athletics may augment the visibility of a university to prospective students and thereby benefit the school, it may also have a negative effect on the current student body by influencing risky behavior, especially the consumption of alcohol commonly associated with game day festivities. Using the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (CAS), we find that a school’s participation in the NCAA Tournament is associated with a 30% increase in binge drinking and a 9% increase in self-reported drunk driving by male students at that school. The results suggest that this increase is not offset by less alcohol use before or after the tournament (intertemporal substitution) but instead seems to represent a net increase in the amount of alcohol consumed by students at participating schools.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine factors related to physical activity adherence to understand why women continue to participate in long-term exercise after completing a structured exercise program. Data were collected from focus groups, interviews, and e-mails, and analysis used grounded theory. The central category related to physical activity adherence was self-worth. Motivation, activity enjoyment, priorities, body image, ability to access support, and self-regulation skills had an impact on the self-worth of nonadherers and adherers. Women must value themselves enough to continue to participate in physical activity once they start. Exercise and fitness professionals are encouraged to use strategies to increase self-worth and long-term adherence to physical activity. Some recommended strategies include (a) increasing motivation and enjoyment relative to activity, (b) making activity a high priority in a woman's life, (c) improving or deemphasizing body image, (d) increasing a woman's ability to access support, and (e) facilitating the use of self-regulation strategies. This study is the first to examine qualitative perspectives of exercise adherence among women who completed a structured exercise program. Several concepts related to adherence presented in the quantitative literature are confirmed and enhanced in this study.

Abstract: We perform a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic properties of van der Waals (vdW) trilayers via intercalating a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer (ML = BN, MoSe2, WS2, or WSe2) between a MoS2 bilayer to form various MoS2/ML/MoS2 sandwich trilayers. We find that the BN monolayer is the most effective sheet to decouple the interlayer vdW coupling of the MoS2 bilayer, and the resulting sandwich trilayer can recover the electronic structures of the MoS2 monolayer, particularly the direct-gap character. Further study of the MoS2/BN superlattices confirms the effectiveness of the BN monolayer for the decoupling of the MoS2–MoS2 interaction. In addition, the intercalation of a transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) MoSe2 or WSe2 sheet makes the sandwich trilayer undergo an indirect-gap to direct-gap transition due to the newly formed heterogeneous S/Se interfaces. In contrast, the MoS2/WS2/MoS2 sandwich trilayer still retains the indirect-gap character of the MoS2 bilayer due to the lack of the heterogeneous S/Se interfaces. Moreover, the 3D superlattice of the MoS2/TMDC heterostructures also exhibits similar electronic band characters to the MoS2/TMDC/MoS2 trilayer heterostructures, albeit a slight decrease of the bandgap compared to the trilayers. Compared to the bulk MoS2, the 3D MoS2/TMDC superlattice can give rise to new and distinctive properties. Our study offers not only new insights into electronic properties of the vdW multilayer heterostructures but also guidance in designing new heterostructures to modify electronic structures of 2D TMDC crystals.

Abstract: Doppler velocity observations obtained by the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) instruments directly measure the nearly steady flows in the solar photosphere. The sun's differential rotation is accurately determined from single observations. The rotation profile with respect to latitude agrees well with previous measures, but it also shows a slight north-south asymmetry. Rotation profiles averaged over 27-day rotations of the sun reveal the torsional oscillation signal-weak, jetlike features, with amplitudes of 5 meters per second, that are associated with the sunspot latitude activity belts. A meridional circulation with a poleward flow of about 20 meters per second is also evident. Several characteristics of the surface flows suggest the presence of large convection cells.
