Abstract: There is growing need for the identification of novel non-invasive methodologies for the identification of individuals at risk for adverse cardiovascular (CV) events. We examined whether endothelial dysfunction, as detected by non- invasive peripheral arterial tonometry (EndoPAT), can predict late CV events. Methods and results Reactive hyperaemia (RH) was induced following upper arm occlusion of systolic blood pressure in 270 outpatients (54+ 12 years, 48% female). The natural logarithmic scaled RH index (L_RHI) was calculated from the ratio between the digital pulse volume during RH and at baseline. The patients were followed for CV adverse events (AE: cardiac death, myocardial infarction, revascularization or cardiac hospitalization) during a 7-year follow-up (inter-quartile range ¼ 4.4-8). Cox models were used to estimate the association of EndoPAT results with AE adjusted for age. During the follow-up, AE occurred in 86 patients (31%). Seven-year AE rate was 48% in patients with L_RHI , 0.4 vs. 28% in those with L_RHI � 0.4 (P ¼ 0.03). Additional univariate predictors of AE were advancing age (P ¼ 0.02) and prior coronary bypass surgery (P ¼ 0.01). The traditional Framingham risk score was not higher in patients with AE. Multivariate analysis identified L_RHI , 0.4 as an independent predictor of AE (P ¼ 0.03). Conclusion A low RH signal detected by EndoPAT, consistent with endothelial dysfunction, was associated with higher AE rate during follow-up. L_RHI was an independent predictor of AE. Non-invasive assessment of peripheral vascular func- tion may be useful for the identification of patients at risk for cardiac AEs.

Abstract: The authors investigated the structure of goal contents in a group of 1,854 undergraduates from 15 cultures around the world. Results suggested that the 11 types of goals the authors assessed were consistently organized in a circumplex fashion across the 15 cultures. The circumplex was well described by positioning 2 primary dimensions underlying the goals: intrinsic (e.g., self-acceptance, affiliation) versus extrinsic (e.g., financial success, image) and self-transcendent (e.g., spirituality) versus physical (e.g., hedonism). The circumplex model of goal contents was also quite similar in both wealthier and poorer nations, although there were some slight cross-cultural variations. The relevance of these results for several theories of motivation and personality are discussed.

Abstract: Lean body mass, as estimated from 40 K counting, declines progressively during adult life. The rate of decline tends to speed up in later years, and is somewhat greater in the male. By age 65–70 the average male has 12 Kg. less LBM than at age 25; the female has 5 Kg. less. Longitudinal observations show that this trend is for the most part biological, not secular in origin. The magnitude of the decline is such, and the sex difference in LBM great enough to suggest that age and sex should both be taken into account in such matters as drug dosage and nutritional requirements.

Abstract: Vascular aging is mainly characterized by endothelial dysfunction. We found decreased free nitric oxide (NO) levels in aged rat aortas, in conjunction with a sevenfold higher expression and activity of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). This is shown to be a consequence of age-associated enhanced superoxide (·O2−) production with concomitant quenching of NO by the formation of peroxynitrite leading to nitrotyrosilation of mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), a molecular footprint of increased peroxynitrite levels, which also increased with age. Thus, vascular aging appears to be initiated by augmented ·O2− release, trapping of vasorelaxant NO, and subsequent peroxynitrite formation, followed by the nitration and inhibition of MnSOD. Increased eNOS expression and activity is a compensatory, but eventually futile, mechanism to counter regulate the loss of NO. The ultrastructural distribution of 3-nitrotyrosyl suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a major role in the vascular aging process.
