TLDR
Iron has the capacity to accept and donate electrons readily, interconverting between ferric (Fe2+) and ferrous (Fe3+) forms, which makes it a useful component of cytochromes, oxygen-binding molecules, and many enzymes.Abstract:

Inhibition of iron overload-induced apoptosis and necrosis of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by melatonin.
Fan Yang,Yuan Li,Gege Yan,Tianyi Liu,Chao Feng,Rui Gong,Yuan Ye,Fengzhi Ding,Lai Zhang,Elina Idiiatullina,Valentin Pavlov,Zhenbo Han,Wenya Ma,Qi Huang,Ying Yu,Zhengyi Bao,Xiuxiu Wang,Bingjie Hua,Zhimin Du,Benzhi Cai,Lei Yang +20 more
TL;DR: Melatonin protected BMSCs from iron overload induced apoptosis and necrosis by regulating Bcl-2, Bax, Cleaved Caspase-3, RIP1 and RIP3 pathways, and melatonin receptor blocker luzindole failed to block the protection of B MSCs apoptotic death by melatonin.

Continuing treatment with Salvia miltiorrhiza injection attenuates myocardial fibrosis in chronic iron-overloaded mice.
Ying Zhang,Hao Wang,Lijing Cui,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yang Liu,Xi Chu,Zhenyi Liu,Jianping Zhang,Li Chu +8 more
TL;DR: Salvia miltiorrhiza exerted activities against cardiac fibrosis induced by CIO, which may be attributed to its inhibition of iron deposition, as well as collagen metabolism and oxidative stress.

Prevalence and Relationships of Iron Deficiency Anemia with Blood Cadmium and Vitamin D Levels in Korean Women
Young Ju Suh,Ji Eun Lee,Dae Hyung Lee,Hyeon Gyu Yi,Moon Hee Lee,Chul Soo Kim,Jeung Weon Nah,Soon Ki Kim +7 more
TL;DR: The prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA are relatively high in late adolescents and women of reproductive age, and depressed vitamin D levels increase the risk of IDA, and that IDA increases cadmium concentrations in blood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of Brain Iron Content Based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Comparison among Phase Value, R2* and Magnitude Signal Intensity
TL;DR: This study indicates that phase value may not be used for assessing the iron content in some brain regions especially globus pallidus, and proposes a new method using magnitude signal intensity that is highly consistent with R2* especially in globus Pallidus.

Corrosion resistance and blood compatibility of lanthanum ion implanted pure iron by MEVVA
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize the chemical state and depth profiles of La, Fe and O elements and implanted the lanthanum ion into pure iron specimens by metal vapor vacuum arc (MEVVA) source at an extracted voltage of 40kV to improve its corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.

TL;DR: Using linkage-disequilibrium and full haplotype analysis, this paper identified a 250-kilobase region more than 3 megabases telomeric of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that is identical-by-descent in 85% of patient chromosomes.

A novel MHC class-I-like gene is mutated in patients with hereditary haemochromatosis
TL;DR: Using linkage–disequilibrium and full haplotype analysis, a region more than 3 megabases telomeric of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that is identical–by–descent in 85% of patient chromosomes is identified, containing a gene related to the MHC class I family, termed HLA–H, containing two missense alterations.

TL;DR: A new metal-ion transporter in the rat, DCT1, which has an unusually broad substrate range that includes Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Pb2+.

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency in the United States
TL;DR: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are still relatively common in toddlers, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age and were more likely in those who are minority, low income, and multiparous.

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.
Joseph V. Gray,Keith J. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.
