TL;DR: The results reaffirm the astonishing efficiency of Tf-derived Fe utilization in hemoglobin (Hb)-producing cells and demonstrate that very little of this Fe is present in a chelatable pool, congruent with the hypothesis that a transient endosome-mitochondrion interaction mediates iron transfer between these organelles.

Modulation of cellular iron metabolism by hydrogen peroxide. Effects of H2O2 on the expression and function of iron-responsive element-containing mRNAs in B6 fibroblasts.

TL;DR: It is shown that treating murine B6 fibroblasts with a pulse of 100 μmH2O2 for 1 h is sufficient to alter critical parameters of iron homeostasis in a time-dependent manner, and that H2O 2 regulates cellular iron acquisition and intracellular iron distribution by both IRP1-dependent and -independent mechanisms.

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.

TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.
