TLDR
Iron has the capacity to accept and donate electrons readily, interconverting between ferric (Fe2+) and ferrous (Fe3+) forms, which makes it a useful component of cytochromes, oxygen-binding molecules, and many enzymes.

A dual-functional Cd(II)–organic-framework demonstrating selective sensing of Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions exclusively and size-selective catalysis towards cyanosilylation

TL;DR: In this article, a dual-functional complex with the formula Cd2(L)(DMF)2(H2O)2 (L = 2,3′,5,5′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid) has been successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by thermogravimetric analyses, IR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and single crystal X -ray diffraction.

Membrane-inserted conformation of transmembrane domain 4 of divalent-metal transporter

TL;DR: The first direct experimental evidence for secondary-structural features and membrane insertions of a 24-residue peptide, corresponding to TM4 of DMT1 (DMTI-TM4), in various membrane-mimicking environments by the combined use of CD and NMR spectroscopies is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI

Iron supplementation brings up a lacking P300 in iron deficient children

TL;DR: An attention deficit is demonstrated in ID children through a severely reduced P300, which recovers substantially after iron supplementation, and a clear and strong correlation was found between ID and attention alterations in children.
Journal ArticleDOI

Abnormally high serum ferritin levels among professional road cyclists

TL;DR: The situation progressively improved over 3 years, it remains worrying as increased body iron stores are related to health complications, therefore, prevention in addition to the fight against doping should be a main goal of the UCI.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inclusion of Guava Enhances Non-Heme Iron Bioavailability but Not Fractional Zinc Absorption from a Rice-Based Meal in Adolescents

TL;DR: In this paper, the bioavailability of iron and zinc from a rice-based meal in 16 adolescent boys and girls, 13-15 y of age, from 2 government-run residential schools was studied.

A novel MHC class-I-like gene is mutated in patients with hereditary haemochromatosis

John N. Feder
- 01 Jan 1996 -
TL;DR: Using linkage–disequilibrium and full haplotype analysis, a region more than 3 megabases telomeric of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that is identical–by–descent in 85% of patient chromosomes is identified, containing a gene related to the MHC class I family, termed HLA–H, containing two missense alterations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cloning and characterization of a mammalian proton-coupled metal-ion transporter

TL;DR: A new metal-ion transporter in the rat, DCT1, which has an unusually broad substrate range that includes Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Pb2+.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency in the United States

TL;DR: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are still relatively common in toddlers, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age and were more likely in those who are minority, low income, and multiparous.
Journal ArticleDOI

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.

TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.
