TLDR
Iron has the capacity to accept and donate electrons readily, interconverting between ferric (Fe2+) and ferrous (Fe3+) forms, which makes it a useful component of cytochromes, oxygen-binding molecules, and many enzymes.

x-Irradiation in Rat Liver: Consequent Upregulation of Hepcidin and Downregulation of Hemojuvelin and Ferroportin-1 Gene Expression

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the effect of x-irradiation of rat liver and isolated rat hepatocytes on hepcidin, hemojuvelin, and ferroportin-1 expression.

Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Framework Probe: Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorescent Turn-On Sensor for M3+ (Al3+, Cr3+, and Fe3+) Ions.

TL;DR: In this article, a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent turn-on sensor using a porphyrinic MOF, Tb-TCPP, is presented, which displays a 10-fold fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions.

Molecular and clinical aspects of iron homeostasis: From anemia to hemochromatosis.

TL;DR: The discovery in recent years of a plethora of new genes whose products are implicated in iron homeostasis has led to rapid expansion of knowledge in the field of iron metabolism and its underlying complex regulation in both health and disease.

Mercaptophenylboronic acid-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots for highly selective and sensitive fluorescence detection of glycoproteins

TL;DR: A novel fluorescent turn-on sensor based upon measuring the fluorescence enhancement of mercaptophenylboronic acid-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs@MBA) that shows a great potential for detecting glyproteins present in the complex biological or biomedical samples.

Enzyme-mimic activity of ferric nano-core residing in ferritin and its biosensing applications

TL;DR: As a natural protein-caged nanoparticle with an enzyme-mimic activity, ferritin is readily conjugated with biomolecules to construct nanobiosensors, thus holds promising potential for facile and biocompatible labeling for sensitive and robust bioassays in biomedical applications.

A novel MHC class-I-like gene is mutated in patients with hereditary haemochromatosis

John N. Feder
- 01 Jan 1996 -
TL;DR: Using linkage–disequilibrium and full haplotype analysis, a region more than 3 megabases telomeric of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that is identical–by–descent in 85% of patient chromosomes is identified, containing a gene related to the MHC class I family, termed HLA–H, containing two missense alterations.

Cloning and characterization of a mammalian proton-coupled metal-ion transporter

TL;DR: A new metal-ion transporter in the rat, DCT1, which has an unusually broad substrate range that includes Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Pb2+.

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency in the United States

TL;DR: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are still relatively common in toddlers, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age and were more likely in those who are minority, low income, and multiparous.

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.

TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.
