TLDR
Iron has the capacity to accept and donate electrons readily, interconverting between ferric (Fe2+) and ferrous (Fe3+) forms, which makes it a useful component of cytochromes, oxygen-binding molecules, and many enzymes.

Is iron gluconate really safer than iron dextran

Quentin Eichbaum, +2 more
- 01 May 2003 -
TL;DR: Parenteral supplementation of iron is required in some patients with iron deficiency, including those with oral iron intolerance, chronic uncorrected bleeding, malabsorption, gastrointestinal inflammatory disease, dialysis dependence, or failure to take prescribed oral iron.
Journal ArticleDOI

Quantitative determinations of microcytic-hypochromic red blood cell population and glycerol permeability in iron-deficiency anemia and β thalassemia minor

TL;DR: The study suggests that the M/H ratio together with the glycerol lysis time (GLT) could serve as a useful screening tool, prior to the application of other more sophisticated methods.

Haemochromatosis protein is expressed on the terminal web of enterocytes in proximal small intestine of the rat

TL;DR: HFE expression was increased in iron deficiency, consistent with a second regulatory role for HFE in iron absorption, independent of hepcidin from the liver.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anaemia after renal transplantation.

TL;DR: The data suggest that anaemia is not associated with mortality and graft loss, and a promising future aspect for risk reduction of cardiovascular disease includes the effect of erythropoietic agents on endothelial progenitor cells.

Mechanisms underlying gastric antiulcerative activity of nitroxides in rats

TL;DR: The results show that: (a) the nitroxide radicals, rather than their respective non-radical reduced form, are the active species responsible for protection; (b) nitroxides protect by dismutating O2*- and possibly indirectly increasing the NO level; and (c) unlike classical LMWA which are reducing agents, nitoxides inhibit gastric damage by acting as mild oxidants, oxidizing reduced metals and pre-empting the Fenton reaction.

A novel MHC class-I-like gene is mutated in patients with hereditary haemochromatosis

John N. Feder
- 01 Jan 1996 -
TL;DR: Using linkage–disequilibrium and full haplotype analysis, a region more than 3 megabases telomeric of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that is identical–by–descent in 85% of patient chromosomes is identified, containing a gene related to the MHC class I family, termed HLA–H, containing two missense alterations.

Cloning and characterization of a mammalian proton-coupled metal-ion transporter

TL;DR: A new metal-ion transporter in the rat, DCT1, which has an unusually broad substrate range that includes Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Pb2+.

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency in the United States

TL;DR: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are still relatively common in toddlers, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age and were more likely in those who are minority, low income, and multiparous.

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.

TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.
