TLDR
Iron has the capacity to accept and donate electrons readily, interconverting between ferric (Fe2+) and ferrous (Fe3+) forms, which makes it a useful component of cytochromes, oxygen-binding molecules, and many enzymes.

Ameliorative and antioxidant effects of myrtle berry seed (Myrtus communis) extract during reflux-induced esophagitis in rats.

TL;DR: The data suggest that myrtle berry seed aqueous extract exerted a potential protective effect against ER-induced damage in rat esophagus, at least in part, due to its antioxidant properties.

Iron status and the treatment of the anemia of prematurity

TL;DR: Many unanswered issues regarding rhEPO therapy in prematurity remain, including which premature infants best respond torhEPO, what the long-term effect of decreased erythrocyte transfusions is, how nutritional supplementation optimizes the effect of rhEPo, and whether or not rhEpo therapy causes iron deficiency later in life.

Surfactant free platinum nanocluster as fluorescent probe for the selective detection of Fe (III) ions in aqueous medium

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the platinum nanocluster (Pt NC) as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of Fe3+ in the human blood sample and showed that the change in luminescent property occurs due to the specific interaction of the nano-clusters and Fe 3+ ions.

Glucose metabolism after normalization of markers of iron overload by venesection in subjects with hereditary hemochromatosis

TL;DR: Most patients with AGM had an improvement in glucose tolerance status, probably due to the augmented action of insulin in peripheral tissues, and normalization of ferritin and transferrin saturation by venesection in subjects with HH led to improvements in some, but not all, measures of insulin secretion and action.

A novel MHC class-I-like gene is mutated in patients with hereditary haemochromatosis

John N. Feder
- 01 Jan 1996 -
TL;DR: Using linkage–disequilibrium and full haplotype analysis, a region more than 3 megabases telomeric of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that is identical–by–descent in 85% of patient chromosomes is identified, containing a gene related to the MHC class I family, termed HLA–H, containing two missense alterations.

Cloning and characterization of a mammalian proton-coupled metal-ion transporter

TL;DR: A new metal-ion transporter in the rat, DCT1, which has an unusually broad substrate range that includes Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+ and Pb2+.

Prevalence of Iron Deficiency in the United States

TL;DR: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are still relatively common in toddlers, adolescent girls, and women of childbearing age and were more likely in those who are minority, low income, and multiparous.

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.

TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.
