Journal ArticleDOI
Sugar-sweetened beverages and risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes: Epidemiologic evidence
Frank B. Hu,Vasanti S. Malik +1 more
TL;DR: It is thought that SSBs contribute to weight gain in part by incomplete compensation for energy at subsequent meals following intake of liquid calories, and should be replaced by healthy alternatives such as water, to reduce risk of obesity and chronic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Uric acid transport and disease.
Alexander So,Bernard Thorens +1 more
TL;DR: The biology of urate metabolism and its role in disease is discussed and recent studies identifying SLC2A9, which encodes the glucose transporter family isoform Glut9, as a major determinant of plasma uric acid levels and of gout development are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Broader View: Microbial Enzymes and Their Relevance in Industries, Medicine, and Beyond
TL;DR: In this review, an approach has been made to highlight the importance of different enzymes with special emphasis on amylase and lipase in the different industrial and medical fields.
Journal ArticleDOI
Where is mTOR and what is it doing there
Charles Betz,Michael N. Hall +1 more
TL;DR: The finding that mTORC1 is localized to the lysosome has significantly enhanced the understanding of m TORC1 regulation and may be a general principle used by TOR to enact precise spatial and temporal control of cell growth.

Journal ArticleDOI
Association of hyperuricaemia and gout with hyperparathyroidism.
TL;DR: A review of joint lesions in 19 cases of hyperparathyroidism, 18 of them primary and due to an adenoma, it was found that of the 12 in which the serum uric acid was measured hyperuricaemia was present in 11, of which five had clinical gout, and the present paper gives an account of these cases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aspiration of the asymptomatic metatarsophalangeal joint in gout patients and hyperuricemic controls
TL;DR: The presence of crystals in the subjects with gout was not correlated with a history of podagra, duration of gout, presence of tophi, or degree of control of hyperuricemia, and the presence of these crystals in asymptomatic joints was more common in subjects with Gout.
Journal ArticleDOI
The uricosuria and orotic aciduria induced by 6-azauridine*
TL;DR: The pyrimidine analog 6-azauridine (6-AZUR) interrupts the major pathway for the de novo biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides after its biological conversion to 6-AZauridine-5'-phosphate (7-AZUMP).
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of obesity and hypertriglyceridemia on gout development with or without hyperuricemia: A prospective study
Jiunn-Horng Chen,Wen-Harn Pan,Chih-Cheng Hsu,Wen-Ting Yeh,Shao Yuan Chuang,Pin-Yu Chen,Hui-Chen Chen,Chwen-Tzuei Chang,Wei-Lun Huang +8 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesized that the interactions between serum uric acid (sUA) and other potential metabolic comorbidities increase the risk of gout development.
Journal ArticleDOI
The risk of lead toxicity in homes with lead paint hazard.
Joel Schwartz,Ronnie Levin +1 more
TL;DR: Lead paint was found to be a significant predictor of the probability of a child having lead toxicity, and the reduction in leaded gasoline sales during the period reduced mean blood lead levels and increased the percentage of lead toxic children whose toxicity could be attributed to paint lead.
