Journal ArticleDOI
Sugar-sweetened beverages and risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes: Epidemiologic evidence
Frank B. Hu,Vasanti S. Malik +1 more
TL;DR: It is thought that SSBs contribute to weight gain in part by incomplete compensation for energy at subsequent meals following intake of liquid calories, and should be replaced by healthy alternatives such as water, to reduce risk of obesity and chronic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Uric acid transport and disease.
Alexander So,Bernard Thorens +1 more
TL;DR: The biology of urate metabolism and its role in disease is discussed and recent studies identifying SLC2A9, which encodes the glucose transporter family isoform Glut9, as a major determinant of plasma uric acid levels and of gout development are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Broader View: Microbial Enzymes and Their Relevance in Industries, Medicine, and Beyond
TL;DR: In this review, an approach has been made to highlight the importance of different enzymes with special emphasis on amylase and lipase in the different industrial and medical fields.
Journal ArticleDOI
Where is mTOR and what is it doing there
Charles Betz,Michael N. Hall +1 more
TL;DR: The finding that mTORC1 is localized to the lysosome has significantly enhanced the understanding of m TORC1 regulation and may be a general principle used by TOR to enact precise spatial and temporal control of cell growth.

Journal ArticleDOI
The distribution of serum uric acid values in a population unselected as to gout or hyperuricemia: tecumseh, michigan 1959-1960.
TL;DR: The data with reference to relative distribution above arbitrarily defined cutting points suggest that these points, commonly used in clinical medicine to define "hyperuricemia," are unrealistically low and, in addition, fail to take into account important differences associated with age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reaction of Uric Acid with Peroxynitrite and Implications for the Mechanism of Neuroprotection by Uric Acid
Giuseppe L. Squadrito,Rafael Cueto,Andres E. Splenser,Andres E. Splenser,Athanasios Valavanidis,Houwen Zhang,Rao M. Uppu,William A. Pryor +7 more
TL;DR: The therapeutic effects of uric acid may be related to the scavenging of the radicals CO(*-)(3) and NO(*)(2) that are formed from the reaction of peroxynitrite with CO(2) and may represent a new and viable approach for ameliorating the adverse effects associated with peroxlynitrite in many diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rheumatic diseases in China.
Qing Yu Zeng,Ren Chen,J. Darmawan,Zheng Yu Xiao,Su Biao Chen,Richard D Wigley,Shun Le Chen,Nai Zheng Zhang +7 more
TL;DR: Prevalence of rheumatic diseases in China is comparable with that in Western countries but varies in terms of joint involvement, and the prevalence of ankylosing spondylitis is similar to that in Caucasians.
The Chemical Basis of Heredity
TL;DR: In this lecture given to an audience of non-scientists, Kornberg demonstrated his talent for making complex topics accessible, and provided a look at the state of the art in molecular biology in 1961.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serum uric acid and cardiovascular disease: Recent developments, and where do they leave us?
TL;DR: Trials of SUA-lowering therapy in hyperuricemic patients evaluating the effect on cardiovascular outcomes are justified in high-risk patients because the magnitude of excess risk attributable to high SUA is likely to be small in healthy individuals.
