Sugar-sweetened beverages and risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes: Epidemiologic evidence

TL;DR: It is thought that SSBs contribute to weight gain in part by incomplete compensation for energy at subsequent meals following intake of liquid calories, and should be replaced by healthy alternatives such as water, to reduce risk of obesity and chronic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Uric acid transport and disease.

TL;DR: The biology of urate metabolism and its role in disease is discussed and recent studies identifying SLC2A9, which encodes the glucose transporter family isoform Glut9, as a major determinant of plasma uric acid levels and of gout development are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Broader View: Microbial Enzymes and Their Relevance in Industries, Medicine, and Beyond

TL;DR: In this review, an approach has been made to highlight the importance of different enzymes with special emphasis on amylase and lipase in the different industrial and medical fields.
Journal ArticleDOI

Where is mTOR and what is it doing there

TL;DR: The finding that mTORC1 is localized to the lysosome has significantly enhanced the understanding of m TORC1 regulation and may be a general principle used by TOR to enact precise spatial and temporal control of cell growth.

Journal ArticleDOI

Alteration of urate metabolism by weight reduction.

TL;DR: This study emphasises the importance of acquired factors in the development of gout and that correction of these may obviate the need for pro‐longed drug therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Clinical audit of foot problems in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated at Counties Manukau District Health Board, Auckland, New Zealand

TL;DR: This clinical audit suggests that the majority of RA patients suffer from foot problems, and the provision of a podiatrist within the current CMDHB multidisciplinary rheumatology team to ensure better services for RA patients with foot problems is recommended.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pathophysiology, clinical presentation and treatment of gout.

TL;DR: With early intervention, careful monitoring and patient education, gout is a condition that can be managed very effectively, particularly in a subset of patients with refractory disease and those who are intolerant to currently available medications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetics of gout.

TL;DR: Functional determination that GLUT9 and ABCG2 can transport urate at the apical border of proximal tubules implicates them as substantial players in the renal excretion of urate, which combined with their activities as urate transporters and their strong associations with serum uric acid concentrations appeared to be important modulators of uric Acid levels and likely of the risk of gout.
