Journal ArticleDOI
Sugar-sweetened beverages and risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes: Epidemiologic evidence
Frank B. Hu,Vasanti S. Malik +1 more
TL;DR: It is thought that SSBs contribute to weight gain in part by incomplete compensation for energy at subsequent meals following intake of liquid calories, and should be replaced by healthy alternatives such as water, to reduce risk of obesity and chronic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Uric acid transport and disease.
Alexander So,Bernard Thorens +1 more
TL;DR: The biology of urate metabolism and its role in disease is discussed and recent studies identifying SLC2A9, which encodes the glucose transporter family isoform Glut9, as a major determinant of plasma uric acid levels and of gout development are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Broader View: Microbial Enzymes and Their Relevance in Industries, Medicine, and Beyond
TL;DR: In this review, an approach has been made to highlight the importance of different enzymes with special emphasis on amylase and lipase in the different industrial and medical fields.
Journal ArticleDOI
Where is mTOR and what is it doing there
Charles Betz,Michael N. Hall +1 more
TL;DR: The finding that mTORC1 is localized to the lysosome has significantly enhanced the understanding of m TORC1 regulation and may be a general principle used by TOR to enact precise spatial and temporal control of cell growth.

Journal ArticleDOI
Smoking a Single Cigarette Rapidly Reduces Combined Concentrations of Nitrate and Nitrite and Concentrations of Antioxidants in Plasma
TL;DR: It is indicated that smoking a single cigarette temporarily decreases nitrate, nitrite, and serum antioxidant concentrations in the plasma, which may partially contribute to coronary vasoconstriction, which is routinely observed after smoking.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serum Uric Acid Predicts Incident Hypertension in a Biethnic Cohort: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
Philip B. Mellen,Anthony J. Bleyer,Thomas P. Erlinger,Gregory W. Evans,F. Javier Nieto,Lynne E. Wagenknecht,Marion R. Wofford,David M. Herrington +7 more
TL;DR: Serum uric acid was positively associated with incident hypertension over 9 years of follow-up, and this relationship was stronger in blacks than in whites, especially in blacks.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute arthritis in man and dog after intrasynovial injection of sodium urate crystals

Replacement of calcineurin inhibitors with mycophenolate mofetil in liver-transplant patients with renal dysfunction: a randomised controlled study
Hans J. Schlitt,Annette Barkmann,Klaus H.W. Böker,Nikos Emmanouilidis,Jens Rosenau,Matthias J. Bahr,G. Tusch,Michael P. Manns,Björn Nashan,Jürgen Klempnauer +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors conducted a randomised study to assess the safety and efficacy of calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) withdrawal and replacement by mycophenolate mofetil.
