TLDR
It is demonstrated that acute activation of serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus increases active coping with inescapable stress in rats and mice in a time-locked manner, and that acute inhibition of these neurons increases anxiety-like behaviors specifically in rats.

Embracing diversity in the 5-HT neuronal system.

TL;DR: This Review discusses recent data from molecular genetic, genomic and functional methods that yield a reframing of the 5-HT neuronal system as a conglomeration of diverse subsystems with potential to inspire novel, more targeted therapies for clinically distinct 5- HT-related disorders.

Optogenetic and chemogenetic insights into the neurocircuitry of depression-like behaviour: A systematic review.

TL;DR: A complex interacting network of relevant structures, in which central circuitries causally related to depressive‐like behaviour are implicated, has been identified and most relevant structures emerge: medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area, hippocampus and raphe nuclei.

Roles for androgens in mediating the sex differences of neuroendocrine and behavioral stress responses.

TL;DR: The role of androgens in stress-related behaviors and HPA function has been explored in this paper, focusing on androgens as an important hormone for modulating the HPA axis and behaviors throughout life and for setting up sex differences in key stress regulatory systems that could impact risk for disease in adulthood.

Targeting Serotonin1A Receptors for Treating Chronic Pain and Depression.

TL;DR: This arti-cle targets the 5-HT1A receptors to show that indiscriminate activation of pre and postsynaptic 5- HT1A receptor receptors is likely to produce no therapeutic benefits; biased activation of the5-HT heteroreceptors may be a useful strategy for treating chronic pain and depression individually as well as in a comorbid condition.

Modulation of depression-related behaviors by adiponectin AdipoR1 receptors in 5-HT neurons

TL;DR: It is shown that adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) is expressed in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) and colocalized with tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), a marker of serotonin (5-HT) neurons, and acts on 5-HT neurons through AdipOR1 receptors to regulate depression-related behaviors in a sex-dependent manner.

TL;DR: Prevalence and severity of health loss were weakly correlated and age-specific prevalence of YLDs increased with age in all regions and has decreased slightly from 1990 to 2010, but population growth and ageing have increased YLD numbers and crude rates over the past two decades.

Association of Anxiety-Related Traits with a Polymorphism in the Serotonin Transporter Gene Regulatory Region

TL;DR: The short variant of the polymorphism reduces the transcriptional efficiency of the 5-HTT gene promoter, resulting in decreased 5HTT expression and 5HT uptake in lymphoblasts as discussed by the authors, which is the site of action of widely used uptake-inhibiting antidepressant and antianxiety drugs.

Millisecond-timescale, genetically targeted optical control of neural activity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors adapted the naturally occurring algal protein Channelrhodopsin-2, a rapidly gated light-sensitive cation channel, by using lentiviral gene delivery in combination with high-speed optical switching to photostimulate mammalian neurons.

Applications of the Morris water maze in the study of learning and memory.

TL;DR: Lesions in distinct brain regions like hippocampus, striatum, basal forebrain, cerebellum and cerebral cortex were shown to impair MWM performance, but disconnecting rather than destroying brain regions relevant for spatial learning may impair M WM performance as well.

Major depressive disorder.

TL;DR: This review presents the major current approaches to understanding the biologic mechanisms of major depression and defines depression as a heterogeneous disorder with a highly variable course, an inconsistent response to treatment, and no established mechanism.
