TLDR
The incidence of thromboembolic complications and vascular mortality were significantly lower in the warfarin group than in the aspirin and placebo groups, which did not differ significantly.About:

Atrial fibrillation in chronic hemodialysis patients: prevalence, types, predictors, and treatment practices in Greece.
George Tsagalis,Nerantzoula Bakirtzi,Efstathios Manios,Ioannis Chouliaras,Parthenia Papagiannidou,Eleni Stamellou,Theodore Akrivos,Fotis Makris,Erasinia Psimenou,George Koutroubas,Koustantinos Xinos,Koustantinos Vemmos +11 more
TL;DR: A prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study of 574 patients on a regular HD program for >6 months found that age, smoking, left atrial and aortic root diameter, β-blocker and α-calcidol use, HF, and the presence of valvular calcifications on cardiac echo were independently associated with AF.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patterns of warfarin use and subsequent outcomes in atrial fibrillation in primary care practices.
TL;DR: Warfarin was underutilized in a substantial portion of eligible atrial fibrillation patients in these community-based primary care practices, and multiple interruptions were associated with over twice the risk of stroke when compared to those treated continuously.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prophylaxis and management of atrial fibrillation after general thoracic surgery.
TL;DR: In management of AF, a brief trial of rate-control agents is appropriate; however, chemical cardioversion with rhythm- control agents should be instituted after 24 hours, and high-risk patients with history of stroke or transient ischemic attack, or with two or more risk factors for thromboembolism should receive anticoagulation therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of treatment with low-dose warfarin-aspirin on activated factor VII.
TL;DR: The results suggest a rebound in the factor VIIa level may occur after treatment is stopped, and this finding provides further rationale for the antithrombotic effect of low-dose warfarin.

A multiple testing procedure for clinical trials.
TL;DR: The overall size of the procedure is shown to be controlled with virtually the same accuracy as the single sample chi-square test based on N(m1 + m2) observations and the power is found to bevirtually the same.

Epidemiologic assessment of chronic atrial fibrillation and risk of stroke: The Framingham Study
TL;DR: Controlled trials of anticoagulants or antiarrhythmic agents in persons with chronic AF may demonstrate if strokes can be prevented in this highly susceptible group.

Explanatory and pragmatic attitudes in therapeutical trials
Daniel Schwartz,Joseph Lellouch +1 more
TL;DR: Most therapeutic trials are inadequately formulated from the earliest stages of their conception, and it often occurs that one type of approach is ethically less defensible than the other, or may even be ruled out altogether on ethical grounds.

Randomised trial of prophylactic daily aspirin in British male doctors
Richard Peto,Richard Gray,Rory Collins,Keith Wheatley,Charles H. Hennekens,K Jamrozik,Charles Warlow,B Hafner,E Thompson,S Norton +9 more
TL;DR: A six year randomised trial was conducted among 5139 apparently healthy male doctors to see whether 500 mg aspirin daily would reduce the incidence of and mortality from stroke, myocardial infarction, or other vascular conditions.

The natural history of lone atrial fibrillation. A population-based study over three decades.
Stephen L. Kopecky,Bernard J. Gersh,Michael D. McGoon,Jack P. Whisnant,David R. Holmes,Duane M. Ilstrup,Robert L. Frye +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that lone atrial fibrillation in patients under the age of 60 at diagnosis is associated with a very low risk of stroke, and routine anticoagulation may not be warranted.
