TL;DR: UVB-induced ROS formation, cell fatality, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant depletion and oxidative DNA damage in HDFa cells is inhibited by sesamol, which, probably through its ROS scavenging activity, shows maximum protection for UVB- induced oxidative damage.
Abstract: The exposure of cells to ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) can induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which damage cellular components. Free radical scavengers and antioxidants can interfere with the production of ROS. We studied cytotoxicity, intracellular ROS levels, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant status and oxidative DNA damage in cultured human skin dermal fibroblast adult cells (HDFa) exposed to UVB in the presence of sesamol, a natural phenolic compound. The levels of cytotoxicity, intracellular ROS, lipid peroxidation, oxidative DNA damage and apoptotic morphological changes were significantly increased in UVB irradiated HDFa cells. We also observed that the activities of enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase) and the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidant status (GSH) were significantly decreased in UVB irradiated cells. On the other hand, sesamol pretreatment significantly decreased cytotoxicity, intracellular ROS, lipid peroxidation, oxidative DNA damage and apoptotic morphological changes in sesamol-pretreated and UVB-irradiated HDFa cells. We have also observed increased enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants status in sesamol plus UVB-irradiated cells. Among the different doses tested, 80 μM of sesamol shows maximum protection for UVB-induced oxidative damage. In conclusion, UVB-induced ROS formation, cell fatality, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant depletion and oxidative DNA damage in HDFa cells is inhibited by sesamol, which, probably through its ROS scavenging activity.

TL;DR: The sediments were extremely contaminated with respect to Cd and they showed moderate to strong contamination withrespect to Cr, Pb and Ni and the study highlighted the future risk of enhanced metal pollution in near future in this mangrove ecosystem.
Abstract: The 26 December 2004-Tsunami has deposited sediments in the Pichavaram mangrove ecosystem, east coast of India. Ten surface and three core sediment samples were collected within thirty days of the event. High concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, and Ni were observed in the tsunamigenic sediments. With respect to Fe, Zn, and Mn, there was little variation as compared to pre-tsunami values. The geo-accumulation index was calculated in order to assess the contamination of heavy metals in the sediments. The sediments were extremely contaminated with respect to Cd and they showed moderate to strong contamination with respect to Cr, Pb and Ni. The study highlighted the future risk of enhanced metal pollution in near future in this mangrove ecosystem.

TL;DR: This paper describes pharmacy education in India and highlights major issues in pharmacy practice including deficiencies in curriculum, and the changing face of the profession is discussed.
Abstract: Pharmacy education in India traditionally has been industry and product oriented. In contrast to the situation in developed nations, graduate pharmacists prefer placements in the pharmaceutical industry. To practice as a pharmacist in India, one needs at least a diploma in pharmacy, which is awarded after only 2 years and 3 months of pharmacy studies. These diploma-trained pharmacists are the mainstay of pharmacy practice. The pharmacy practice curriculum has not received much attention. In India, there has been a surge in the number of institutions offering pharmacy degrees at various levels and a practice-based doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree program was started in some private institutions in 2008. However, relatively little information has been published describing the current status of complex pharmacy education of India. In this paper we describe pharmacy education in India and highlight major issues in pharmacy practice including deficiencies in curriculum. The changing face of the profession is discussed, including the establishment of the PharmD program. The information presented in this paper may stimulate discussion and critical analysis and planning, and will be of value in further adaptation of the pharmacy education to desired educational outcomes.
