TL;DR: Macquarie Harbour waters (S=20) were not found to be toxic to N. closterium and it is proposed that at least some of the copper was associated with colloids containing humic matter and iron and manganese (hydr)oxides.

TL;DR: In this paper, the mean and turbulent flow field have been measured in a cascade of high turning turbine rotor blades, and the results show that the mean flow field is not affected greatly by the high inlet turbulence.
Abstract: Measurements of the mean and turbulent flow field have been made in a cascade of high turning turbine rotor blades. The inlet turbulence was raised to 5% by a grid placed upstream of the cascade, and the secondary flow region was traversed within and downstream of the blades using a 5 hole probe and crossed hot-wires. Flow very close to the end wall was measured using a single wire placed at several orientations. Some frequency spectra of the turbulence were also obtained. The results shows that the mean flow field is not affected greatly by the high inlet turbulence. The Reynolds stresses were found to be very high, particularly in the loss core. Assessment of the contributions to production of turbulence by the Reynolds stresses show that the normal stresses have significant affects as well as the shear stresses. The calculation of eddy viscosity from two independent shear stresses show it to be fairly isotropic in the loss core. Within the blade passage, the flow close to the end wall is highly skewed and exhibits generally high turbulence. The frequency spectra show no significant resonant peaks, except for one at very low frequency, attributable to an acoustic resonance.Copyright © 1990 by ASME

TL;DR: In this paper, a new method of cold expansion is proposed, which uses a tapered pin with a mating tapered split sleeve and creates an almost uniform compressive residual stress around the hole as shown by the FE method.
Abstract: A recognized way of improving the fatigue resistance of a fastener hole is to introduce compressive tangential residual stress around it. This can be achieved by using a cold expansion method in which an oversized pin or ball is forced through the hole to produce a local plastic region surrounded by an elastic one. Once the pin or ball is removed allowing the elastic region to spring back it results in compressive tangential residual stress around the hole. In practise, however, it is found that such a cold expansion method creates a non-uniform residual stress distribution through the plate thickness and even tensile residual stress can be created at the entrance and exit faces. In this paper a new method of cold expansion is proposed. It uses a tapered pin with a mating tapered split sleeve and creates an almost uniform compressive residual stress around the hole as shown by FE method. Also, fatigue tests were carried out to verify that the method does significantly improve fatigue life. Finally the tangential residual stress distribution and fatigue life improvement of this new method were compared with those of a well-established cold expansion method and it was shown that the new method is more efficient in improving fatigue life.

TL;DR: The polycondensation reaction, followed by an end-capping reaction, effectively provides a linear polymer without Br terminals.
Abstract: The polycondensation reaction of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene with 2,7-dibromo-9,9-dioctylfluorene via Pd-catalyzed direct arylation gives poly[(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2,5-diyl)-(9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl)]. The reaction conditions are optimized in terms of the Pd precatalysts, reaction time, and carboxylic acid additives. The combination of 1 mol% Pd(OAc)(2) and 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid as an additive is the optimized catalytic system, and it yields the corresponding polymer with a molecular weight of 39,400 in 89% yield. The polycondensation reaction, followed by an end-capping reaction, effectively provides a linear polymer without Br terminals.
