Abstract: Recently, it has been proposed that organic aerosol particles in the atmosphere can exist in an amorphous semi-solid or solid (i.e. glassy) state. In this perspective, we analyse and discuss the formation and properties of amorphous semi-solids and glasses from organic liquids. Based on a systematic survey of a wide range of organic compounds, we present estimates for the glass forming properties of atmospheric secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In particular we investigate the dependence of the glass transition temperature Tg upon various molecular properties such as the compounds' melting temperature, their molar mass, and their atomic oxygen-to-carbon ratios (O : C ratios). Also the effects of mixing different compounds and the effects of hygroscopic water uptake depending on ambient relative humidity are investigated. In addition to the effects of temperature, we suggest that molar mass and water content are much more important than the O : C ratio for characterizing whether an organic aerosol particle is in a liquid, semi-solid, or glassy state. Moreover, we show how the viscosity in liquid, semi-solid and glassy states affect the diffusivity of those molecules constituting the organic matrix as well as that of guest molecules such as water or oxidants, and we discuss the implications for atmospheric multi-phase processes. Finally, we assess the current state of knowledge and the level of scientific understanding, and we propose avenues for future studies to resolve existing uncertainties.

Abstract: Working in the category of based spaces, we give the basic theory of diagram spaces and diagram spectra. These are functors for a suitable small topological category . When is symmetric monoidal, there is a smash product that gives the category of -spaces a symmetric monoidal structure. Examples include \begin{enumerate} \item[] prespectra, as defined classically, \item[] symmetric spectra, as defined by Jeff Smith, \item[] orthogonal spectra, a coordinate-free analogue of symmetric spectra with symmetric groups replaced by orthogonal groups in the domain category, \item[] -spaces, as defined by Graeme Segal, \item[] -spaces, an analogue of -spaces with finite sets replaced by finite CW complexes in the domain category. \end{enumerate} We construct and compare model structures on these categories. With the caveat that -spaces are always connective, these categories, and their simplicial analogues, are Quillen equivalent and their associated homotopy categories are equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. Monoids in these categories are (strict) ring spectra. Often the subcategories of ring spectra, module spectra over a ring spectrum, and commutative ring spectra are also model categories. When this holds, the respective categories of ring and module spectra are Quillen equivalent and thus have equivalent homotopy categories. Abstract: Soil organisms are a crucial part of the terrestrial biosphere. Despite their importance for ecosystem functioning, few quantitative, spatially explicit models of the active belowground community currently exist. In particular, nematodes are the most abundant animals on Earth, filling all trophic levels in the soil food web. Here we use 6,759 georeferenced samples to generate a mechanistic understanding of the patterns of the global abundance of nematodes in the soil and the composition of their functional groups. The resulting maps show that 4.4 ± 0.64 × 1020 nematodes (with a total biomass of approximately 0.3 gigatonnes) inhabit surface soils across the world, with higher abundances in sub-Arctic regions (38% of total) than in temperate (24%) or tropical (21%) regions. Regional variations in these global trends also provide insights into local patterns of soil fertility and functioning. These high-resolution models provide the first steps towards representing soil ecological processes in global biogeochemical models and will enable the prediction of elemental cycling under current and future climate scenarios.

Abstract: We calculate the equation of state in $2+1$ flavor QCD at finite temperature with physical strange quark mass and almost physical light quark masses using lattices with temporal extent ${N}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}=8$. Calculations have been performed with two different improved staggered fermion actions, the asqtad and p4 actions. Overall, we find good agreement between results obtained with these two $O({a}^{2})$ improved staggered fermion discretization schemes. A comparison with earlier calculations on coarser lattices is performed to quantify systematic errors in current studies of the equation of state. We also present results for observables that are sensitive to deconfining and chiral aspects of the QCD transition on ${N}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}=6$ and 8 lattices. We find that deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration happen in the same narrow temperature interval. In an appendix we present a simple parametrization of the equation of state that can easily be used in hydrodynamic model calculations. In this parametrization we include an estimate of current uncertainties in the lattice calculations which arise from cutoff and quark mass effects.
