Abstract: Analog hardware architecture of a memristor bridge synapse-based multilayer neural network and its learning scheme is proposed. The use of memristor bridge synapse in the proposed architecture solves one of the major problems, regarding nonvolatile weight storage in analog neural network implementations. To compensate for the spatial nonuniformity and nonideal response of the memristor bridge synapse, a modified chip-in-the-loop learning scheme suitable for the proposed neural network architecture is also proposed. In the proposed method, the initial learning is conducted in software, and the behavior of the software-trained network is learned by the hardware network by learning each of the single-layered neurons of the network independently. The forward calculation of the single-layered neuron learning is implemented on circuit hardware, and followed by a weight updating phase assisted by a host computer. Unlike conventional chip-in-the-loop learning, the need for the readout of synaptic weights for calculating weight updates in each epoch is eliminated by virtue of the memristor bridge synapse and the proposed learning scheme. The hardware architecture along with the successful implementation of proposed learning on a three-bit parity network, and on a car detection network is also presented.

Abstract: A longstanding problem in the field of image-guided surgery is the development of ideal near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores. The heptamethine NIR fluorophore indocyanine green (ICG) has been used extensively for image-guided surgery because of clinical availability and safety.[1-3] However, ICG is far from ideal because it exhibits high uptake in the liver, contaminates the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, provides moderate optical properties,[4] is unstable in aqueous media,[3,5] and is unable to conjugate covalently to targeting ligands.[2] Although several classes of novel molecules have been described,[6-13] none to date exhibit simultaneous low background binding, bifunctionality, excellent optical properties, low protein binding, and high serum stability. Although it is intuitive that physicochemical properties, i.e., positive/negative charge density, hydrophilicity/lipophilicity, and charge distribution, will impact in vivo performance, chemical structures that exhibit ideal characteristics have not yet been defined.

Abstract: This paper presents two kinds of adaptive control schemes for robot manipulator which has the parametric uncertainties. In order to compensate these uncertainties, we use the FLS (fuzzy logic system) that has the capability to approximate any nonlinear function over the compact input space. In the proposed control schemes, we need not derive the linear formulation of robot dynamic equation and tune the parameters. We also suggest the robust adaptive control laws in all proposed schemes for decreasing the effect of approximation error. To reduce the number of fuzzy rules of the FLS, we consider the properties of robot dynamics and the decomposition of the uncertainty function. The proposed controllers are robust not only to the structured uncertainty such as payload parameter, but also to the unstructured one such as friction model and disturbance. The validity of the control scheme is shown by computer simulations of a two-link planar robot manipulator.

Abstract: Growth charts are curves or tables that facilitate the visualization of anthropometric parameters, and are widely used as an important indicator when evaluating the growth status of children and adolescents. The latest version of the Korean National Growth Charts released in 2007 has raised concerns regarding the inclusion of data from both breastfed and formula-fed infants, higher body mass index (BMI) values in boys, and smaller 3rd percentile values in height-for-age charts. Thus, new growth charts have been developed to improve the previous version. The 2006 World Health Organization Child Growth Standards, regarded as the standard for breastfed infants and children, were introduced for children aged 0-35 months. For children and adolescents aged 3-18 years, these new growth charts include height-for-age, weight-for-age, BMI-for-age, weight-for-height, and head circumference-for-age charts, and were developed using data obtained in 1997 and 2005. Data sets and exclusion criteria were applied differently for the development of the different growth charts. BMI-for-age charts were adjusted to decrease the 95th percentile values of BMI. Criteria for obesity were simplified and defined as a BMI of ≥95th percentile for age and sex. The 3rd percentile values for height-for-age charts were also increased. Additional percentile lines (1st and 99th) and growth charts with standard deviation lines were introduced. 2017 Korean National Growth Charts are recommended for the evaluation of body size and growth of Korean children and adolescents for use in clinics and the public health sector in Korea.
