Abstract: Fungi can accumulate metal and radionuclide species by physico-chemical and biological mechanisms including extracellular binding by metabolites and biopolymers, binding to specific polypeptides and metabolism-dependent accumulation. Biosorptive processes appear to have the most potential for environmental biotechnology. ‘Biosorption’ consists of accumulation by predominatly metabolism-independent interactions, such as adsorptive or ion-exchange processes: the biosorptive capacity of the biomass can be manipulated by a range of physical and chemical treatments. Immobilized biomass retains biosorptive properties and possesses a number of advantages for process applications. Native or immobilized biomass can be used in fixed-bed, air-lift or fluidized bed bioreactors; biosorbed metal/radionuclide species can be removed for reclamation and the biomass regenerated by simple chemical treatments.

Abstract: The aim was to understand the factors influencing informal disclosure of child sexual abuse experiences, taking account of dynamics operating prior to, during, and following disclosure. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 young people who experienced child sexual abuse and 14 parents. Grounded theory methodology informed the study. The key factors identified as influencing the disclosure process included being believed, being asked, shame/self-blame, concern for self and others, and peer influence. Many young people both wanted to tell and did not want to tell. Fear of not being believed; being asked questions about their well-being; feeling ashamed of what happened and blaming themselves for the abuse, for not telling, and for the consequences of disclosure; concern for how both disclosure and nondisclosure would impact on themselves and others; and being supported by and yet pressurized by peers to tell an adult, all illustrate the complex intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics reflecting the conflict inherent in the disclosure process. These findings build on previous studies that emphasize the dialogic and interpersonal dynamics in the disclosure process. Both intrapersonal and interpersonal influencing factors need to be taken account of in designing interventions aimed at helping children tell. The importance of asking young people about their psychological well-being and the role of peer relationships are highlighted as key to how we can help young people tell.

Abstract: Language identification at the document level has been considered an almost solved problem in some application areas, but language detectors fail in the social media context due to phenomena such as utterance internal code-switching, lexical borrowings, and phonetic typing; all implying that language identification in social media has to be carried out at the word level. The paper reports a study to detect language boundaries at the word level in chat message corpora in mixed EnglishBengali and English-Hindi. We introduce a code-mixing index to evaluate the level of blending in the corpora and describe the performance of a system developed to separate multiple languages.

Abstract: Notch signaling has been shown recently to regulate vascular cell fate in adult cells. By applying a uniform equibiaxial cyclic strain to vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs), we investigated the role of strain in modulating Notch-mediated growth of SMCs in vitro. Rat SMCs cultured under conditions of defined equibiaxial cyclic strain (0% to 15% stretch; 60 cycles/min; 0 to 24 hours) exhibited a significant temporal and force-dependent reduction in Notch 3 receptor expression, concomitant with a significant reduction in Epstein Barr virus latency C promoter-binding factor-1/recombination signal-binding protein of the Jκ immunoglobulin gene–dependent Notch target gene promoter activity and mRNA levels when compared with unstrained controls. The decrease in Notch signaling was Gi-protein– and mitogen-activated protein kinase–dependent. In parallel cultures, cyclic strain inhibited SMC proliferation (cell number and proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression) while significantly promoting SMC apoptosis (annexin V binding, caspase-3 activity and bax/bcl-x L ratio). Notch 3 receptor overexpression significantly reversed the strain-induced changes in SMC proliferation and apoptosis to levels comparable to unstrained control cells, whereas Notch inhibition further potentiated the changes in SMC apoptosis and proliferation. These findings suggest that cyclic strain inhibits SMC growth while enhancing SMC apoptosis, in part, through regulation of Notch receptor and downstream target gene expression.
