Abstract: While numerous claims have been made for the pedagogical benefits of eLearning, these claims are rarely subjected to rigorous empirical evaluation. Moreover, there are indications that eLearning is more expensive to deliver than conventional distance teaching. One component of this extra cost arises from the greater time input required of teachers/tutors in eLearning environments. This article evaluates a number of online pedagogical techniques which offer the potential to enhance student learning of higher-order cognitive skills while limiting demands on tutor time. The online techniques tested were resources/debates and peer-tutoring. Evaluation of the learning of higher-order skills was carried out through analysis of students' contributions to a series of online discussions. This evaluation suggests that, given the appropriate pedagogical design, students can develop effective ways of conducting online discussions which display evidence of engaging in higher-order learning. Abstract: Analogues of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ were prepared in which one pyridine ligand site is substituted by a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand, that is, either by an imidazolylidene with a variable wingtip group R (R = Me, 3a; R = Et, 3b; R = iPr, 3c), or by a benzimidazolylidene (Me wingtip group, 3d), or by a 1,2,3-triazolylidene (Me wingtip group, 3e). All complexes were characterized spectroscopically, photophysically, and electrochemically. An increase of the size of the wingtip groups from Me to Et or iPr groups distorts the octahedral geometry (NMR spectroscopy) and curtails the reversibility of the ruthenium oxidation. NHC ligands with methyl wingtip groups display reversible ruthenium oxidation at a potential that reflects the donor properties of the NHC ligand (triazolylidene > imidazolylidene > benzimidazolylidene). Abstract: This paper presents the results of task 3 of the ShARe/CLEF eHealth Evaluation Lab 2014. This evaluation lab focuses on improving access to medical information on the web. The task objective was to investigate the eect of using additional information such as a related discharge summary and external resources such as medical ontologies on the eectiveness of information retrieval systems, in a monolingual (Task 3a) and in a multilingual (Task 3b) context. The participants were al- lowed to submit up to seven runs for each language (English, Czech, French, German), one mandatory run using no additional information or external resources, and three each using or not using discharge sum- maries.

Abstract: This article seeks to contribute to a vision for leadership in business based on a recovery of virtue. The vision for leadership articulated here draws principally on the writings of the classical philosopher Aristotle and of the contemporary philosopher Josef Pieper. Without discounting the ever-increasing complexity of modern business, this essay will attempt to reconstruct Aristotle’s emphasis on virtue and moral character, and argues for the philosopher’s relevance to modern management and corporate leadership. The paper concludes that the message of virtue is a message of hope and attempts to find plain language to articulate its value to those engaged in business or concerned with the formulation of government policy.
