TL;DR: The continuous phase engineering of the effective nonlinear polarizability enables complete control over the propagation of harmonic generation signals, paving the way for highly compact nonlinear nanophotonic devices.
Abstract: The capability of locally engineering the nonlinear optical properties of media is crucial in nonlinear optics. Although poling is the most widely employed technique for achieving locally controlled nonlinearity, it leads only to a binary nonlinear state, which is equivalent to a discrete phase change of π in the nonlinear polarizability. Here, inspired by the concept of spin-rotation coupling, we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear metasurfaces with homogeneous linear optical properties but spatially varying effective nonlinear polarizability with continuously controllable phase. The continuous phase control over the local nonlinearity is demonstrated for second and third harmonic generation by using nonlinear metasurfaces consisting of nanoantennas of C3 and C4 rotational symmetries, respectively. The continuous phase engineering of the effective nonlinear polarizability enables complete control over the propagation of harmonic generation signals. Therefore, this method seamlessly combines the generation and manipulation of harmonic waves, paving the way for highly compact nonlinear nanophotonic devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, the mediating role of information sharing in the relationship between dimensions of social capital and firm competitiveness was investigated, and the results from multiple regression and structural equation model tests showed that information sharing plays a mediator role in the relationships between three dimensions of trust, network ties, and repeated transactions.
Abstract: This study investigates the mediating role of information sharing in the relationships between dimensions of social capital and firm competitiveness, thereby positing a possible explanation for the divergent empirical results of the social capital–performance relationship in the existing literature. The study uses a sample of 108 Hong Kong-based Chinese family-owned firms from the manufacturing sector. Largely supporting the theoretical predictions, the results from multiple regression and structural equation model tests show that information sharing plays a mediating role in the relationships between three dimensions of social capital (trust, network ties, and repeated transactions) and firm competitiveness improvement.

TL;DR: A highly selective copper(II) ion fluorescent sensor has been designed based on the UV-visible absorption of a spiropyran derivative coupled with the use of a metal porphyrin operative on the fluorescence inner filter effect, which presents an excellent selectivity for copper ion in comparison with several other heavy or transition metal ions.
Abstract: A highly selective copper(II) ion fluorescent sensor has been designed based on the UV−visible absorption of a spiropyran derivative coupled with the use of a metal porphyrin operative on the fluorescence inner filter effect. Spiropyrans, which combine the characteristics of metal binding and signal transduction, have been widely utilized in cationic ion recognition by UV−visible spectroscopy. In the present work, the viability of converting the absorption signal of the spiropyran molecule into a fluorescence signal was explored. On account of overlap of the absorption band of the spiropyran (λabs = 547 nm) in the presence of copper ion with the Q-band of an added fluorophore, zinc meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (λabs = 556 nm), the effective light absorbed by the porphyrin and concomitantly the emitted light intensity vary as a result of varying absorption of the spiropyran via fluorescence inner filter effect. The metal binding characteristic of the spiropyran presents an excellent selectivity for copper ion...

TL;DR: The results suggest that Si-enhanced tolerance to Cd can be attributed not only toCd immobilization caused by silicate-induced pH rise in the soils but also to Si-mediated detoxification of Cd in the plants.

TL;DR: Results show that at individual stock, sector and index levels, the models with sentiment analysis outperform the bag-of-words model in both validation set and independent testing set, and the models which use sentiment polarity cannot provide useful predictions.
Abstract: Financial news articles are believed to have impacts on stock price return. Previous works model news pieces in bag-of-words space, which analyzes the latent relationship between word statistical patterns and stock price movements. However, news sentiment, which is an important ring on the chain of mapping from the word patterns to the price movements, is rarely touched. In this paper, we first implement a generic stock price prediction framework, and plug in six different models with different analyzing approaches. To take one step further, we use Harvard psychological dictionary and Loughran–McDonald financial sentiment dictionary to construct a sentiment space. Textual news articles are then quantitatively measured and projected onto the sentiment space. Instance labeling method is rigorously discussed and tested. We evaluate the models' prediction accuracy and empirically compare their performance at different market classification levels. Experiments are conducted on five years historical Hong Kong Stock Exchange prices and news articles. Results show that (1) at individual stock, sector and index levels, the models with sentiment analysis outperform the bag-of-words model in both validation set and independent testing set; (2) the models which use sentiment polarity cannot provide useful predictions; (3) there is a minor difference between the models using two different sentiment dictionaries.
