Abstract: Patulin (PAT) is a highly genotoxic mycotoxin still found as the common contaminant of various kinds of spoiled fruits and related commodities which are often endorsed as the health-enhancing products. Thus, a fast and convenient liquid-solid extraction followed by a solid-phase cleanup with the MycoSep®228 AflaPat multifunctional column was used for the highly efficient isolation of PAT with an average recovery of 112.7% from commercial dietary supplements and herbal blends formulated with dried hawberry. Analysis of the PAT content was carried out using gradient elution with a Synergi Polar C18 column (150 × 2 mm, 4 μm) and UHPLC system equipped with a mass spectrometer. PAT was detected in all ( ) commercial single-component dietary supplements formulated with dried hawberry belonging to Crataegus monogyna and/or Crataegus laevigata. Similarly, PAT was detected in 67% of the studied multicomponent commercial herbal blends ( ) that contained—in addition to hawberry—different amounts of apple, chokeberry, elderberry, hibiscus, or mallow. Moreover, the PAT content was determined in the hawberry collected from the mature wild hawthorn trees belonging to three botanical species, Crataegus monogyna Jacq., Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC, and Crataegus rhipidophylla Gand, growing in the recreational forest areas and in the law-protected state national forest park in Poland. In conclusion, to prevent PAT accumulation and reduce the health risk of consumers in globalizing markets, the implementation of improved cultivation/processing practices of hawthorn trees and hawberry as well as increased analytical control related to the presence of PAT in dietary supplements and herbal blends formulated with fresh, dried, or frozen hawberry should be urgently recommended.

Abstract: This paper discusses the role of macro- and micro-inertial forces in the falling head permeability test. The model of flow including viscous and dynamic interaction forces is formulated. Then, the model is used to perform numerical simulations of the tests for high-permeability soils. The presented results prove the existence of a level of permeability of materials above which macro-and micro-inertial forces are important and that in all cases the latter forces are dominant. The results suggest limited validity of the standard interpretation of the falling head permeability test and possible usefulness of the test to determine both permeability and the parameter characterizing non-linear interactions of fluid and solid skeleton. Abstract: This work analyses atmospheric transport of natural and anthropogenic pollution to the South Shetland Islands (SSI), with particular reference to the period September 2015 – August 2017. Based on data from the Global Volcanism Program database and air mass back trajectories calculated using the HySPLIT model, it was found that it is possible that in the analysed period volcanic pollution was supplied via long-range transport from South America, and from the South Sandwich Islands. Air masses flowed in over the South Shetland Islands from the South America region relatively frequently – 226 times during the study period, which suggests the additional possibility of anthropogenic pollution being supplied by this means. In certain cases the trajectories also indicated the possibility of atmospheric transport from the New Zealand region, and even from the south-eastern coast of Australia. The analysis of the obtained results is compared against the background of research by other authors. This is done to indicate that research into the origin of chemical compounds in the Antarctic environment should take into account the possible influx of pollutants from remote areas during the sampling period, as well as the possible reemission of compounds accumulated in snow and ice.

Abstract: Background: ‪Literature reports indicate changes in the expression of genes encoding proinflammatory factors are observed as a result of physical exercise. The stress changes caused by high-intensity loads and adaptive changes induced by the planned long-term training are less studied. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of intense anaerobic effort in people adapted to regular trainings and in non-trained persons on the expression levels of the TNFA gene. Material and methods: ‪50 experienced soccer players and 50 non-trained participants were recruited for the study. Anaerobic capacity was measured by means of the Wingate Anaerobic Test. To evaluate the expression of TNFA gene, a QRT-PCR was applied. Results: ‪A comparison of the TNFA expression profiles between well-trained athletes and non-trained controls revealed that transcript levels were higher in non-trained participants when compared with soccer players in all the studied time points, with the exception of the second post-test; however, this difference was the only one that was statistically insignificant. Conclusions: ‪The TNFA mRNA expression characteristic described in our study indicated a significant downregulation of the TNFA expression observed in the course of time in experienced athletes reflecting molecular adaptation to physical effort caused by long-term training regime.
